The hotel is amazing and the location is fantastic. Loved the quietness of the beach but be aware there are not many facilities in the village itself although what is there is adequate. The staff were lovely and friendly and helpful. The food was great and the bar, which is also open to the public, is very good with a lovely beer garden with a sea view.
The room was very good in many aspects, a good size, tv, tea and coffee etc and spacious. The ensuite bathroom was of a good size and no complaints regarding cleanliness in either the bedroom or bathroom.
However, the mattress was terrible and desperately needs replacing. When you sat on the bed, or turned over you hit the base of the divan bed which did not constitute a good nights sleep. It was August and warm when we stayed and therefore you needed the windows open but there is machinery noise all night long outside the room and therefore the choice was stay awake due to noise or close the windows and put up with being too warm.

Upon arrival we received a warm and friendly reception. Our room was spacious, well furnished and scrupulously clean, The bathroom was also very well appointed. In fact the room provided everything required for a comfortable stay and a good night's sleep. The building itself is quite old but much of it has been most tastefully re-furbished to a very high standard and the work is continuing.
The breakfast offered was very good with a wide choice of hot and cold food. The restaurant provided a good choice of dishes in the evening, the quality was excellent and the quantity would satisfy the largest appetite. The bar was reasonably well stocked and certainly a comfortable place in which to spend some time. However, undoubtedly the best feature of this hotel was the staff. They were friendly, cheerful and nothing was too much trouble.

The staff are all so welcoming and friendly. The bar area is comfortable and the garden has fantastic views if the beach and the sunset.
I booked solely for the location being close to scafell pikes wasdale route but not too expensive and it was perfect for that. A lovely scenic drive to wasdale which took less than 30 minutes.
There is not a lot for this section. The building is of an age where work is needed to update but this did not impact the enjoyment of my stay.
Having information around the hotel was interesting to learn the history

Very good food
Staff were very friendly
Nothing really
Just thought breakfast could offer more such as a toaster and bread available to make your own toast without having to ask.
Also maybe offering croissants or teacakes too.

The lady who checked us in was really welcoming and was expecting us.
The room had a beautiful view and had everything we needed.
When we went for breakfast in the morning, the lady serving was really friendly and we could hear her with the other guests. Nothing was too much trouble and she made sure my daughter had everything she wanted.
Would definitely stay there again.
Thank you.

We’ve dined here before while holidaying in the area, so when visiting family nearby, we decided to stay, and I’m so glad we did. The building itself is gorgeous, full of character and history (once a school, which adds to its charm).
Whilst the room was simple, it had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. But what really stood out were the staff and the food. Every member of the team was friendly and welcoming. Meals were excellent and well-prepared, just what you want after a day exploring.
A lovely place with real heart. We’d happily return.

It was a quirky hotel and the staff were friendly
I found it very strange for a hotel to close up on a sunday afternoon with no one around to serve in the evening. The whole bar area was locked up, so we took the glasses from our room and bought some drinks from the local supermarket.

Great location for visiting Scafell Pike. Local amenities include a SPAR. Opposite the beach, which you can enter a little walk up. Big comfortable room.
No negatives - though an addition of a mini fridge in the room would be helpful. There is also no lift / accessible feature to get to the rooms.

The views from the garden are and sea facing rooms are just stunning, especially on a sunny day. Quite location. Staff and locals were super friendly. Food portions were generous and good selection especially at breakfast where you can help yourself alongside ordering from breakfast menu. Plenty of Bar snacks and nibbles. Free pool table, darts board. Lots of comfy sofas to chill. Garden is beautiful TV selection is better than I have at home. Beds are comfy. Ironing facilities in room. Hair dryer and tea facilities in room.
Looks a bit of a grubby pub from the main road as you pull up with two different paint colours and the surrounding street. Probably just needs good lick of paint. Some attention to detail in rooms. Peeling & stained paint (room 1) empty soap dispensers, loose toilet seat. Railway track work started right at the back of our room at 10pm and went on all night! Which meant were woken several times due to noise. Maybe a few air fresheners in corridors as smells a bit funky when you walk in but this probably due to age of building. Carpets are a bit grubby but probably due to all walkers and dogs. No complimentary toiletries. Only one large towel and one hand towel provided between two adults so had to share. WiFi hit and miss.

On arrival in Cumbria from Sussex, my two daughters and I arrived at our original accommodation to find that it had been double-booked. Tired and stressed and already late in the evening, we made a new reservation with Calder House Hotel. We were given such a warm welcome, as well as a beautiful family room, which was very clean, very well equipped and very comfortable. Calder House Hotel's owner Elaine and her staff were incredibly friendly, kind and helpful and gave us a wonderful stay! They even suggested putting a mini fridge in our room so that after we returned from climbing Scalfell Pike (our reason for going to Cumbria), our food would be fresh. We accepted this very kind offer. Calder House Hotel has got a rich history - it used to be a school for girls - and is situated right on the beach. The breakfast/dining room has views out onto the fabulous beer garden and the beach, which is accessed via a gate at the bottom of the garden. In all, thanks to Elaine and her staff, we ended up having a wonderful stay and a stress-free climb up Scalfell Pike's Corridor Route! We will be paying a return visit!

Lovely and welcoming guest house/hotel in the perfect location. Really dog friendly so at no point did we feel a nuisance to other guests or staff. Nice evening meal menu and great breakfast.
Maybe a bit more choice of breakfast for the children…Pan au chocolate, pancakes.

The view was breathtaking. Even on a cloudy rainy day.
Tv channel options were brilliant. No free view only here.
Nothing really. Train noise but that's not the hotels fault.

The location was lovely, overlooking the beach, just a couple of minutes walk. The area was clean also.
Ample car parking.
There is a good size bar and seating area for socialising or small quiet private areas if you need it. You can have your food in the bar area, the restaurant or on the patio or beer garden. There is a full size snooker table in its own designated room with a tv.
We had a lovely sea view room, quite large and spacious. Very clean, the linen and towels smelt fresh.
Comfortable double bed.
Plenty of room for luggage in a large built in wardrode, with an Iron/Ironing board, hair dryer, coat hangers etc and a fan heater (not that you will need to use that!)
Large flat TV with a good signal
Free WiFi also with a good signal
Good size bathroom with a large walk in shower that worked great and clean
Plenty of tea & coffee in the room with a good size kettle
Lovely and quiet
Large lawned area/beer garden
The freindly staff couldn't do enough for you. We asked for a couple of special requests and were catered for straight away.
You could easily see that a lot of hard work, love and affection is put in by the staff to make your stay memorable.
We couldn't find anything not to like.

We had such a lovely stay at this hotel! From the moment we arrived the staff were brilliant, so friendly and informative about the surrounding areas. Originally we planned to stay one night but we ended up staying two nights! It’s also extremely dog friendly.
The rooms were so clean, cosy and had everything you needed for your stay. The garden is just beautiful with amazing views of the stunning beach which is a 2 minute walk from the hotel. Breakfast was also lovely, it was nice to help yourself to the tea and coffee facilities and enjoy a nice cuppa in the garden in the morning! Highly recommend this hidden gem to anyone, also a recommend visiting the stunning lake wastwater which is a 20 minute drive away!
Thank you to all the staff for your friendly welcome and a great stay!

This was a little 3 night break so we could do some hiking over the Easter bank holliday. Calder house was absolutely stunning and full of breathtaking history. This place has a snooker table!!! What an absolute magical place and town. Access to the beach through the rear of property where amazing memories were made. The staff and owners are undoubtedly the friendliest I have ever met. The food was just so tasty and fresh. The atmosphere in the bar where locals and guests just chat and have fun.. bring a dog BRING 10 this place makes everything happen. I can't speak highly enough. You have to see to believe.
Having to leave.
