Syukubo Aso

The family-feel ambience. Staffs were friendly, flexible, and easy to communicate. Meals were great, a lot of extra small side dishes to try with. We have to make our own bedding, which was unexpected but a new experience for us.

The location is a bit far from the train station about 15-20 min walk, if you don't drive and have large luggages, that might be challenge. There wasn't a clear sign of which house building is for check in. The ryokan is an old house, the private onsens were smaller (compare to other ones we've stayed in Kyushu this time).

Very charming and cozy. The FOOD was exceptional and unmatched. I also love the massage chair in the lobby.

I can’t thing of anything I don’t like

A very charming timber house externally and internally. Our room is spacious, clean, very quiet, with large windows overlooking the courtyard. The welcome sweet snacks on our first day was delightful. I was pleasantly surprised that there are different sweet snacks on our second day after we came back from hiking. All the staff are very polite, and one female staff speaks good English. In addition to a nice public onsen, we can book a family onsen for private use (best for 2 people). Dinner was divine. It's actually a feast as we were served dishes after dishes, all are beautifully presented and delicious. We stayed for 2 nights, and none of the dinner dishes was the same. We are so happy about the quality and variety. They use lots of locally grown produce and make their own pickles. I didn't know pickles can be so yummy.

It would be perfect if there are more hooks/racks or hangers in the room to hang out towels and clothes.

We love the rustic original feel of the old house. The hostess was an amazing host with great English .She is very friendly and helpful. The food are delicious with the huge variety of local dishes served. Did not have repeats for the two nights we stayed. Due to snowing, our transport company cancelled our trip, She was very kind help us to solve for transport and her husband sent us to the Aso station .We were very appreciative for their kindness.

The futon was a little thin on the tatami mat, but is not an issue
