    Hotel Porto Mare - PortoBay was an amazing hotel, the location was excellent for shops, parks, levadas and easy access into Funchal centre. The hotel had amazing views across the sea and the garden views were so beautiful. There is plenty to keep you busy at the hotel, however, there are so many quiet areas where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The buffet breakfast and themed buffet dinners offered a vast selection of quality fresh food, some of the best hotel food I can recall having and I've stayed at many hotels. There is so much to see and do and Hotel Porto Mare - PortoBay is ideally located, you also have a bus stop Infront of the hotel should you choose to ride rather than walk. Make sure you bring safe walking shoes, you will need them if you plan on exploring this amazing island. We loved our stay so much that even before we had left, we were already starting to plan our return trip. Thank you to the lovely, hard working staff and the dedicated catering teams that fed us so well! We look forward to seeing you all again soon!

    We stayed in december so it was quite cold but the vacation was saved by the super nice indoor/outdoor heated pool, 28C. Location was good just in the bus stop and superior sea view room was indeed super :) Only thing maybe that I could suggest is to make moving between the saunas and indoor pool more convenient instead of going through the lobby. Maybe even consider opening the sauna to all guests during winter time instead of separate booking system, it would make it so much nicer :)

    My family and friends came to PortoBay last Saturday for the first time. We were very happy with all our rooms. 2 self catering and 3 normal rooms. The hotel was very clean. Very friendly and helpful staff. Lots of choice for everyone at breakfast. The children loved the pools and the kids club. Live music each evening was a lovely treat. Madeira is a magical island. We will be back.

    The hotel itself, the amenities like the pools and possibilities to get help with organized tours are fine. But the service and staff make you feel like being a guest is a burden. Throughout: during checkin, at the restaurants and bar, trying to get a parasol for the pool, getting information from the spa, asking for coffee at breakfast, trying to solve a situation with housekeeping, the staff overall was just never friendly. We experienced eye rolls, condescended behavior, and plenty attitude. Maybe they have experienced some rude guests, and make assumptions that each guest is the same. But if we approach someone with a smile, a “please” and a “thank you”, but only get annoyed sighs, never get a smile back, and feel like we are not welcome - it just taints the experience. However, it is conveniently located and one of the prettier places in the area, with two pools and spacious rooms. So if you don’t mind feeling like a burden to the staff, still ok to book. Maybe it helps if you speak Portuguese.
