Volakas Beachfront Suites

Location! The front of the suites is on a busy dusty main road but walking the few steps down into property and it’s a tranquil haven away from any traffic noise and quite literally right on the beach. May be time of year (October) and the fact it’s not a wide sandy beach but the bay was lovely and quiet. Athina is lovely, and was on site to greet and show us around the property. Some very welcome food essentials were already in the fridge together with baked biscuits, raki and wine. There are nice touches such as candles, tissues, shower gel, soaps and cotton buds in the bedroom/bathroom as well as cleaning materials, plus washing tablets by the washing machine. Excellent shower, just took a while for hot water to come through. There is also a very convenient outdoor shower just off the beach, one for each unit, to remove sand and sea water. Athina was very accessible, happy to help with any queries, kindly arranged a taxi for us back to Chania and allowed us to stay on the property for an extra 3 hrs. There is a small convenience store next door, 2 petrol stations very close by if using a car, larger supermarkets also in walking distance as is Rethymno.

If you don’t take all your meals out, the kitchen is very restricted on space for food prep. Other than the fridge there are no cupboards to store dry goods, we had to use the cooker top for items such as cereals, crisps,etc. some food prep knives would be useful, we only found cutlery knives and a bread knife, I’m sure if we’d asked, Athina would have provided. The kitchen units are very high and we needed to stand on a chair to reach wine glasses and pans. The property would benefit from a mirror on the ground floor. Just for info, the stairs are quite steep and there is no hand rail on the lower steps into the lounge area. Again, just for info as we didn’t use, access to the two single beds in the loft mezzanines are up very steep step ladders, one in each of the double rooms - suitable for very able bodied (teenage) guests with a head for heights (the banister is quite low) and families/friends not worried about bedroom privacy, definitely not for anyone who needs to get up in the night for the bathroom! The beach and sea bed are mainly shingle and rocks, made worse by recent storms, so definitely recommend swim shoes.

It was a nice surprise off the main road. We walked into a paradise and I had not realised the property was right on the beach. We had everything we needed. Ou host was very welcoming even at 11pm she gave us a tour of the property. There were homemade biscuits and fresh fruit and RakiRaki left for us

The location was excellent and the terrace and sunloungers overlooking the beach were stunning. Owners let us have a late check out which was much appreciated and fresh fruit.

The owners double booked the first night of our stay despite us booking in February 2026. They put us in alternative accomodation the first night but we missed 24 hours of our holiday. The villa was very tired and needed a renovation. Not very clean. The 4 bedrooms is actually 2 bedrooms with a mezzanine floor with bed in each which is not clear from the description. Some sockets were coming out of the wall and hissing when used which was dangerous along with the gradient of the steps up to each of the mezzanine levels which were also dangerous.

The beachfront and pool are lovely

The walk to town was a bit long some days. We didn’t have a car and to find out, cars are really needs on Crete because there are fees taxis. The glass doors on the bathroom made privacy difficult at times.
