About this house rental

The space
Although recently built, this building actually seems older than the farmhouse it's next to. With oak beamed roof trusses and stone walls inside and out there is a sense of permanence about this place. Shortlake Cottage is located just off a quiet no-through-road and looks out over fields to the coast and beyond. The cottage can sleep up to 5 guests across two bedrooms (room one has one double bed, and room two consists of one double bed and one single bed). The property has all essential white goods, including a toaster, microwave, oven and hob. A high chair is also provided. Upstairs you can find the mezzanine bedroom with sea views. From the cottage, you can find The Smugglers Inn, and a couple of small shops, which are approximately just a 5 minute walk away. The walk to Shortlake Farm's private beach takes just 5 minutes or so across the fields. Well-behaved pets are welcome at Shortlake Cottage, and guests can borrow a dog from Eweleaze Farm for the day. Please note that unless specified, we will make up the double in the main bedroom.

Lovely location, prefect size for family of 4. We did find the property was very cold in December and would be a ideal summer let.

Pros: Check in process was easy, location great for local sight seeing spots, nice shared garden area for kids to run about. Nice features to the cottage. Lovely views from the upstairs room overlooking the isle of Portland. Cons: large infestation of ants and larger flying ants (I think that’s what they were) seeping out under the dog mat which was under the stairs. I left a message via the app but not had a response. Made a call and was told someone would come out within an hour but no one did. We ended up just having to ignore it and not look down there everytime we walked past. This problem persisted throughout our 3 night stay. The double bed upstairs was not made up we had to do this ourselves. Everything was left ontop of the bed. Bottom oven was not working so had to use the smaller combi grill with oven. Washing up liquid provided but no scourer to wash up with. Luckily I had brought my own. No basics such as salt and pepper, the containers were empty. Property could have been cleaner too. Could have done with a coffee table in the living area and somewhere to hand towel and clothes in the bathroom.

Although this had the potential to be a nice property on our visit we were met with dead and living insects just about everywhere, we ended up vacuuming so left cleaner than arrival. The shower in the wet room still leaking, floor wet 24/7. Light bulbs not working in the wet room and upstairs. A continual stream of ants from the door to the stairs. Found a dirty hand towel from the last visitors the only one provided , though some were kindly dropped off after texting the owner directly, as no reply to Vrbo messages sent. Requested a refund of the cleaning fee but nothing forth coming. Vrbo don’t handle complaints they pass them onto the owner. Beware ye who enter
