Let by "Finest Retreats", but far from finest. Cheaply appointed, renewal and love required.
The cottage is old and part of characterful stonewall terrace which sits up high above Matlock, affording a great view from the cottage's downstairs and bedroom windows. There is an excellent fish n chip shop, 2/3 mins walk away. And "Newsroom" and "Farmacy" pubs are nearly, both excellent, friendly watering holes especially for craft beer lovers. With regards to the cottage, the double bed mattress was ok, as for the pillows .. :-( . Other than, not a lot to like. However, credit to the cleaners, as it is not easy to make somewhere tired like this, look relatively tidy and spotless.
Quite frankly, how does a business labelling themselves the "Finest Retreats" have the audacity to rent out such a place at a relatively high cost. Nearly everything inside the cottage was mediocre to sub standard. The sofa and futon in the lounge was reminiscent of student digs. Same goes for downstairs, bathroom suite including, no working lock on door, a swiveling toilet seat, cheap plastic bath panel and an unimpressive electric shower. Same goes for kitchen equipment (aside from an impressive gas / electric range cooker), the drawers and cupboards revealed an eclectic mix of cheap and poor quality mugs, glasses and cutlery. Kettle and toasters clearly came from the Amazon or similar basic range. The bedroom furnishings were also basic and the pillows were knackered. In short, come on guys, show this place some love. Even if you cannot afford to upgrade the bathroom / kitchen, you can at least renew pillows, bedding, provide good quality kitchen equipment, add a decent sofa etc. The cost would be a less than what you receive for one week's rent. And why not welcome your guests with some free tea/coffee/cake as many places do now. If you cannot afford or are unwilling to take such measures, then stop calling yourselves "Finest Retreats" and lower your price. Lastly, for us, the cottage location away from the road / parking, down a steep uneven path (+ steps leading up to door) was no issue to us, but it will be to some. Your literature should make this clear so folk less able are not caught out.

Disappointing
Nowhere comfortable to sit. Had to borrow tools from a neighbour to open the key box to get in. The sink didn’t drain. Generally very disappointed in the standard of accommodation.

Loved the area... beautiful walks nearby within short driving distance
Overall location was great... beautiful area...
Location of house however slightly problematic...see below
Property had not been cleaned upon arrival...dirty linen still on floor and beds not made thus after contacting emergency nr. had to wait for cleaners to arrive before we could settle in and eat s.th. and relax. Also access was not great, had to park uphill some 100 yards away...or even more at times as spaces on main road occasionally already filled. Also t.v. at times did not work properly however thankfully internet worked fine.

Location very difficult to acces both street access and stairs into the property.
Reasonably comfortable.
T V was inadequate. General programmes could not be watched as picture became unstable. Other specific channels were ok.
Stove did not work, unable to prepare frozen pre-cooked meals.

Disappointing but clean bedding and towels, photos don't show how dirty place was
Location
Property not clean, generally poor standard cleaning doesn't seem to have been cleaned very well between guests , black mold on all silicone joints- bathroom and kitchen, kitchen sink worktop becoming rotten, All doors not being able to close easily, shower curtain in disgusting state, vacuum cleaner not been emptied in months, carpets dirty,

Unwelcoming, unclean and unsafe.
The view from the property was very nice due to its location. But this was probably the only good thing.
Firstly, attempting to get to the property is quite a farce, it is down a very steep bank or up very steep steps with no parking beside the property. There is very little to no warning about how steep the journey to the property is.
When entering the property, we found the furniture downstairs to be dreadfully uncomfortable and the cupboard handles to be sticky and generally unclean.
When venturing upstairs, the property only got worse and needed a serious clean as there were cigarette butt's underneath the double bed. This fact is only made worse by how impolite the 'House Rules' are written in the booklet downstairs.
The next morning things only got worse when the shower only dribbled, it was more effective standing in the rain. And the fridge almost toppled onto my mother's feet when she opened it as it is not attached to anything whatsoever despite being built in.
Overall, the property was a complete disaster and unworthy of the current price. You would be better looking elsewhere for somewhere to stay even if it was further afield from the town, after all the only way back up to the property from the town is up an extremely steep hill. It is unclean, unsafe and generally unfriendly.

Pleasant
The view
I found it impossible to use the lower key - glad my husband could use it.
Downstairs loo was a challenge in the night.

Quaint cottage with all the essentials.
Quaint cottage with all the essentials. Games and information provided were a nice touch. Beds were very comfortable.
The hill down to the cottage was a bit steep. We coped fine but someone who was more elderly or had knee issues may not.

Needs some attention
Great view from the house and it's a good location to get to places around Derbyshire. The neighbours were chatty and warm. The kitchen was well equipped. The beds were comfy too
The weather was getting cold and we decide to switch on the heating. It's very noisy and doesn't reach the radiators upstairs and only half the bathroom one. There's hell of a draught from around the front door, and when it rained the water came in under the back door.
The crockery and cutlery needed washing, which we did before use.
The bathroom needs a good scrub.
This property needs some care and attention.

An excellent base location to explore the area. Clean and safe , nice quiet sleep .
A good location as everywhere is within 30 minutes away . A safe environment to stay in with family.
The walk downhill to the town is ok, walk back up is steep but a quick call to a taxi and for a mere £4 you're back up there.

Nice cottage with stunning views
Nice clean and bright terrace cottage with amazing views. Lovely neighbours and nice and quiet. Good internet access and the local pub, The Duke Of Wellington was vey welcoming with great food. Just a short stroll away. Great fish and chips just down the steps which work up your appetite walking back up.
The listing gave the impression there was a dish washer but there isn’t so that was a bit disappointing but not a huge issue. Also the lounge furniture wasn’t that comfortable for us all to sit in the evening. Be aware you need to be a good walker to walk into town and back as the road is very steep but there is a bus service if you want to get the bus back.

Good base with Amazing views, in a lovely part of the country.
The location gave us amazing views over the Derbyshire dales.
Was aware it was up a hill, but my goodness it was a long steep hill!! But car was used to go back and forth to the town centre. It was worth it for the views we were rewarded with.
The owners are lucky to have ellie as a neighbour as she was very helpful in giving us info as to the area and places to eat. Also lovely chatty person.
Although the cottage was overall a good standard, the cleaning of the property could have been a little better E.g the kitchen bin was dirty and broken, the kitchen chair cushions were dirty, and the kitchen table was still needing a wipe down.

Exceptional
Its was a really nice little cottage & was in a nice location. I loved how the staff made sure thing was tea, sugar & milk for then we arrived. I feel in love with the kitchen
I didnt like the massive hill we had to walk up when we came back from matlock town from shopping. There was only one other thing that let the place down & that was the stated there was a washer but this wasnt the case
