Apartment with Outside Patio and Car Space

Tidy place had all you needed. The area didn’t feel safe so we didn’t stay at all. We just had a cup of tea and moved out.

The location - too far away from Durham though it was advertised as near. A complicated route to find the place. No clear instructions. The area felt unsafe and we were not keen to leave our valuables at the property while we’re not there so we decided to find somewhere else. Breakfast was only toast.

Finding the flat and the check-in was easy. The clean and tidy flat was surprisingly roomy (bathroom, kitchen, dining/living room, hall two bedrooms). The kitchen was well equipped (oven, hotplates, microwave, toaster), with the expected cutlery, crockery and utensils. There was a comfortable and cosy dining/living room with a TV (which we didn't watch). The bathroom had an over-bath shower, a bath and a basin. There is plentiful hot water. A generous amount of food supplies was left for us. The outdoor patio was very pleasant, with a pretty table and two chairs in front of a buddleia bush complete with butterflies. Bus connections (204 and 204a) into Durham City are reasonably good during the week and on Saturdays (but there's no service on a Sunday). The bus stop is right outside the flat, with Durham buses stopping on the flat side of the road. The nearby Park and Ride in Belmont was convenient and easy to get to. From the Park and Ride, it's a 10 minute journey into the city. Senior bus passes are accepted on the shuttle bus. We ate out at the local hotel (Hotel 61, a 5-10 minute walk away from the flat) and enjoyed the food and the service - prices fairly standard. There is a roomy parking space for one car just outside the back door in a sort of courtyard behind the houses, so well off the road and out of sight. We saw a convenience store just up the road from the flat, but we didn't buy anything from it. Communications with Anne were excellent and it was easy to check in. All in all, a great place to stay, highly recommended.

The road is quite busy and a bit noisy at times, certainly during the day, less so at night, though traffic starts up quite early. But we are very light sleepers and sensitive to noise - some people might not notice the road sounds. We didn't want to stay in town until late, but if you fancied some nightlife in Durham, you'd have to rely on taxis to get you back home (or drive into town in your own car - as we didn't do this, we can't comment on parking availability and costs). As we don't use taxis much if ever, I don't know how much that would cost, but it's only about a 10 minute journey, especially later at night when there's less traffic about. The flat is a touch dark, but there are lots of lights around to brighten things up. Because of the stairs to the flat above, the bathroom is quite narrow, but it's fine. Some minor noise from the flat above, but nothing serious and certainly not at night while we were staying there (Friday - Monday).
