I’ve stayed here a few times over the years when passing through Adelaide. I remember when it was much smaller, with $10 jugs of beer and the pod beds still quite new near the front room. It has changed a lot since then. I haven’t had dinner or breakfast here, so my comments are mainly about the accommodation. The main advantage over Base Camp is the location. Both have similar pod-style beds and limited shower facilities, which seems to be common across Adelaide backpacker accommodation. At times you do have to wait for showers, although it is a plus that towels are included and shampoo, conditioner and body wash are provided. This is definitely one of the noisier places I’ve stayed, although that is also part of its appeal. It has built a strong international backpacker community, but it may not suit travellers looking for rest, privacy or a quieter local experience. Personally, I don’t think I would stay here again. With YHA undergoing refurbishment and Base Camp offering a strong alternative, I think competition in Adelaide’s hostel market is improving. For travellers who do not mind being slightly outside the centre, Base Camp may be the better option. YHA may also be worth watching once the refurbishment is complete, though current construction and limited shower access may be an issue for now. The location is convenient, especially being close to IGA, which closes at 10pm. This is useful because many Adelaide supermarkets close earlier than in other states, particularly on weekends. KFC is also open late nearby, although the quality is not as strong as in some other states. Overall, it is a lively and well-known hostel with a strong backpacker culture, but for me the noise, limited facilities and inconsistent customer experience make Base Camp or the refurbished YHA more appealing options.

I’m a fairly experienced traveller and have stayed in hostels across different parts of the world, so I try to judge places with a balanced perspective. Unfortunately, this stay fell short in several areas. The first impression wasn’t great. The staff member at reception came across as dismissive and kept us waiting while finishing up on his phone, which didn’t feel particularly welcoming after a long journey. The overall atmosphere of the hostel felt quite off. It’s hard to put into words, but it lacked the usual social, traveller-focused vibe you’d expect. In fact, I initially considered asking for a refund upon arrival, but as that wasn’t possible, we decided to stay and give it a fair chance. To be fair, the room itself was decent and had the essentials covered, comfortable bed, charging points, lighting, fan, towels, and bedding. No complaints there. Where things really declined was in the communal areas. The dining space, particularly during meal times, felt overcrowded and chaotic. It didn’t resemble a typical hostel environment and instead felt more like an overfilled shared space without much structure. The mix of long-term residents and short-term travellers also created an unusual dynamic that didn’t feel particularly comfortable. Cleanliness also seemed difficult to maintain given the number of people using the facilities. Even shortly after check-in, some areas already felt worn and unclean. Overall, I ended up using the hostel purely as a place to sleep and store my belongings, and avoided spending unnecessary time there. While it may suit those looking for a very budget, long-stay option, it didn’t match what I’d expect from a hostel catering to travellers. I wouldn’t choose to stay here again.
