The apartment is in a historical building, which gave it a unique and interesting character. The pictures online made the space look bright and inviting, and the location itself is convenient, on a main street with easy access to nearby amenities.
Our experience was overshadowed by a number of issues. Before arriving, we were contacted repeatedly with detailed instructions about what we could and couldn’t do, including what to say to neighbors, which felt unnecessary. Upon arrival, there were remnants of smashed glass in the living room, and when we contacted the host, we were told to just vacuum it ourselves.
The apartment lacked basic amenities: no microwave, no TV, and no trashcan. The kitchen was only for making a sandwich, and we were told to go across the street to buy one and eat it there. Notes were posted around the apartment reminding guests to clean, turn off lights, avoid noise, not use certain doors, and not adjust the heat. Bedding and towels were minimal, with only one sheet, pillow, and towel per person for a five-night stay. The bathroom was small, moldy, and offered virtually no space for toiletries.
The street outside is brightly lit, and although it is a dead-end, there was significant nighttime noise, including shouting and babies crying, which made the strict rules inside feel ironic. The host indicated this setup was meant to represent “Hygge,” but true Hygge is about comfort, coziness, and enjoying your surroundings — not limiting basic amenities or creating an overly controlled environment. Overall, the apartment felt more like a frat house in a historical building: the owner seemed focused on making money while discouraging guests from comfortably using the space. It could greatly benefit from better cleaning, updated furnishings, and a more hospitable approach.
