About this apartment rental
The Sea Rescuers: volunteering selflessly—today just as they did in the past. Stephan Jantzen, Pilot Commander Stephan Jantzen (1827-1913), as chief of the Warnemünde station of the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS), rescued over 80 people from distress at sea between 1867 and 1903 —often at the risk of his own life. In his honor, the DGzRS named its most modern sea-rescue cruiser the VORMANN JANTZEN after German reunification in 1990. It was initially stationed in Warnemünde and is now in service as a reserve vessel at various DGzRS stations in the Baltic Sea. The entire operation of the DGzRS—with its approximately 1,000 rescue workers at 54 stations and 60 rescue units in the North Sea and Baltic Sea—continues to be financed exclusively by voluntary donations—just as it was in Stephan Jantzen’s day. Approx. 300.000 supporters help the sea rescuers with regular donations. The DGzRS, whose patron is the Federal President, does not accept any taxpayer funds. Jantzen’s home at Am Leuchtturm 1 in Warnemünde now serves as the sea rescuers’ information center. Contact: DGzRS Northeast Information Center, Am Leuchtturm 1, 18119 Rostock (Warnemünde).
