Sadew Home Stay

We stayed with Ishanka and her family after having a bad experience at a nearby hostel, so we booked this place last minute. We were able to check in a little earlier, and Ishanka even prepared breakfast for us! We immediately felt very welcome and well taken care of. The dinner we had on one of our nights was the best food we had in Ella (although it could have been a little spicier! :)). The room was clean and well equipped, and we also used the laundry service, which we were very pleased with. Thank you so much for your hospitality, Ishanka! There are quite a few steps to get to the property, but we didn’t find it too much of an issue.

The homestay offers a beautiful view and consistent hot water. Breakfast was delicious. While there are many stairs to reach the property, the owner was very helpful and assisted us with our backpacks.

The room had a noticeable moldy smell and lacked cleanliness—we found gecko droppings on the mosquito net and dust under the bed. The shower head was also quite old, and the Wi-Fi was unavailable throughout our entire 3-night stay. The biggest issue, however, was the dinner price. Despite other reviews calling it affordable, we were charged 6000 LKR for two people for a very basic meal (one veggie curry, one chicken curry, two small bottles of water, and two small yogurts)! This is double what you would pay at a local restaurant for the same dishes. 6000 LKR is typically the price for a Western-style meal and drinks at a mid-range restaurant. We usually chose to stay and eat at homestays to support local families, but this is the first time we felt ripped off. If you stay here, I strongly recommend dining out or asking for prices upfront to avoid unpleasant surprises at checkout. Their so called kindness shouldn't be a cover for greed.
