We loved Hakone Hostel 1914 – mostly due to our lovely host Kana. She welcomes each guest personally, gets to know them, and provides tailored recommendations for their stay in Hakone. Kana helped us buy the Hakone Freepass, booked us a private onsen around the corner, and made our stay in the hotel comfortable and easy. Through her friendliness, we were also introduced to many of our fellow guests, making this the most social stop on our journey. We made use of the communal kitchen, which is kept clean and full of neat labels. Our bed was spacious and felt private despite being in the communal bunk room. The bathrooms and facilities were kept clean. Overall, this was the greatest hotel we encountered in Japan, and it was all thanks to the sweet, helpful Kana!

Fabulous emplacement ! The hostel was beautiful and well furnished, you'll have everything you need. But the true gem is the hostess ! We discovered amazing spots thanks to Kana, enjoyed every conversation, and felt so grateful and lucky. It felt like spending time with a friend, and I definitely intend to come back ! Can't recommand this place enough !!

The property is in an excellent location, with lots of local onsen and restaurants nearby. Inside, it is a traditional feeling building - over 100 years old, with lots of history in the area. The rooms are spacious and beds are comfortable. The host, Kana, is incredible and made my stay. She gave excellent recommendations and advice on transport routes. We also had great chats, and she is just genuinely lovely person. I can see why she has been mentioned so much in previous reviews. If anyone is considering between this and another hostel, I would absolutely recommend this hostel. You will have a great stay, and experience everything Hakone is about.
