Backpacker 41 Hostel - Taichung

comfortable hostel 3min walk from TRA station, hostel is in central location with many eating places and shops right at door and lots more in easy walk distance. clean hostel, each floor seems to have 2 toilets 4 showers for approx 20 beds dorms well set up with curtains, light, local power outlet, aircon, small lockers avail for refundable deposit use dining area as common space with tables and chairs, kitchen, fridge, wifi great throughout

fire safety is poor: on each floor the stair doors are open (without auto release) meaning that smoke will rise uncontrolled and block escape path.

the common room had a bad poop smell. Washroom is right next to it and someone left the door open. beds were not comfy

The property is really good, just gets a lil hot when they are cleaning but honestly nothing too much to complain about.

The location is unbeatable for visiting central spots in Taichung. Fourth Credit Union (same store as Miyahara) is just around the corner, and there are lots of eating places in walking distance. The beds were okay, and there's a kitchen and shared eating area where you can make tea/coffee and eat food. Each bed has privacy curtains and an outlet for charging phones. The hostel will store your luggage before check-in and after check-out. There were plenty of toilets and showers, and areas were kept clean.

The mattresses were quite thin, and the bunk beds shake with each movement, which isn't great for sleeping. There are small lockers available for a deposit; otherwise, you have to leave your luggage in the room and trust your roommates. My lower legs were bitten badly by something, either mosquitoes or bedbugs (I suspect bedbugs), during my stay. Follow the usual advice of keeping your bag and things off the beds here if you decide to stay.
