The single bedroom was awesome. Everything was clean and I had a good stay. Awesome facilities
The first come first serve for parking cars is fine. But when there is no space left at the building give the drivers some tips to park at nearby places for example you can park outside after 6pm till 8am.
The room has windows but when it is warm the heat cannot go away. So try to have something to open the window so some fresh air can flow inside the room when it will be warm. The sockets on the wall are weirdly placed and quite high.

the vibe was amazing, kitchen very well equipped, bathrooms great! cool prison cell remnants and in a good spot, walking distance to everywhere - people were very nice + a bonus games room was so cool ++ some little kitty cats live there too so cute
only a couple lockers in the lounge room and didn't lock very well, while one night we stayed in a room with people who didnt lock the door so we were scared our stuff wasn't gonna be there when we came back but when it was locked it was fine!

Interesting rooms, former prison cells. Good kitchen. Plenty of common areas. Main street outside the hostel. Close to the beach promenade with bars and cafes.
It can be difficult to check in if you don't have a New Zealand sim card for your phone to be able to call the staff. A doorbell at the door would be helpful.

I liked the beds, they were very comfortable and I slept really well. Also the location was really good, very close to the city center
The housekeeper made me super uncomfortable. He kept staring at me and my friend whenever we were in the shared spaces. He also kept inserting himself into our conversations. A couple of times, he walked into the dorms when he had no reason to and kept staring at me or my friend while we were doing our own things. I also saw fleas on one of the cats. When I told the housekeeper, he didn't seem to care at all. Furthermore, the cats are allowed basically everywhere in the hostel.

This concept is just amazing. I really loved it, with all the colours and love that had to be poured to create such a vibrant place! There is even a guitar and ukulele that you can borrow and just play and chill!
Bed was a bit hard, but I cannot comply, thats part of it, sleeping in a cell hahah. What was worse for me is that I didn't know there are cats inside. For alergic person like me that was hard.

Interesting and unique style. I loved it for its use of an d cell block.
Initially I drive past it because it wasn’t easy to spot from the road. But I loved everything else.

Staff were very helpful and answered quickly when contacted by phone. The property was quirky and brilliant with lots of character and beds were spacious. Kitchen and toilet were clean and it was very quiet.
Names via blackboard were a nice touch, I would just also have a blackboard next to each bed to allocate specific beds.

It was fun and had great common areas. The staff were so friendly - honestly the best bit of the hostel. Shout out to Friday!

I loved the vibe of both the people and the place. It was such a nice space to connect with people and spend lots of time in the common areas. Plus Friday is amazing!!!
My bed was small but I mean it’s a backpackers and cheap so I’m not complaining :)

Nice location, close to shops and restaurants, friendly staff and easy check in. Staff made sure I got a park for my car upon check-in. Very comfy bed and nice room! Would stay again.
Parking is limited, once leaving your spot you are unlikely to get it back. Paid street parking available. Very patchy wifi in room.

The bed was cozy and comfortable but on the upper level. It is a unique place. Now I can tell my friends that I spend a night in jail. There is much to explore. Taking the stairs up you will find a terrace and a game room.
It was strange to be entering by phone. I did miss a towel. Apparently you have to bring that with you.

Nive chat with Rian, through the phone. Very welcoming.
Do not forget your hearplug because it can get pretty noisy at night, from the kitchen and the street

I booked a stay at the "Cell Block" hostel for my father, who had already paid in advance. What followed was one of the most uncomfortable and discriminatory experiences I’ve witnessed in hospitality.
Upon arrival, I called the owner to get the entry code on behalf of my father, who isn’t confident speaking English. The owner immediately questioned why my father didn’t call himself, and once he learned about the language barrier, began interrogating my father’s reasons for staying in a mixed dorm. He implied that someone shy or quiet—especially someone older—would make other guests uncomfortable and suggested my father should leave.
The assumptions didn’t stop there. The owner stated his hostel “isn’t a daycare or hospital” and made it clear he didn’t want to “take care of someone older.” He then shifted his concern to female guests possibly feeling uneasy with a male in the dorm—despite it being a mixed dorm, which guests knowingly book.
He threatened to call the police to forcibly remove us, despite no issue having occurred. Only after being challenged on the payment (which he initially denied had been processed) did he reluctantly allow my father to stay. But the harassment continued via text, where he questioned why my father would choose the cheapest accommodation and claimed the dorm was for “young, international travelers”, not for someone like my father.
It became painfully clear: the owner discriminates against guests based on age and language ability. My father was subjected to a 20-minute interrogation just to be deemed “worthy” of staying in a dorm he had already paid for. If you’re not young, fluent in English, and ready to socialize, this hostel may not welcome you.
Hospitality should be inclusive. This was anything but.

Loved that it was unique! Loved the people and the owners, super friendly and everything was easy and accessible, they also had cats so it was nice cuddling up with them especially with me being away from home and missing my own.
