If you’re chasing authentic old-school Kiwi pub experience, this place certainly captures it. It feels like stepping back in time — for better or worse.”
The only positive I can genuinely mention is that the place has a vintage, old-school NZ pub feel — and unfortunately, it seems the amenities haven’t been updated since that era either.
The shower had almost no water pressure and never properly warmed up, making it a pretty miserable experience. The room itself was uncomfortably hot and poorly ventilated. A fan was provided, but it felt more symbolic than effective.
I was only informed at check-in that there would be a karaoke night running until the early hours of the morning. This wasn’t communicated beforehand, and it absolutely should have been. The bass was so heavy the room was physically shaking, making sleep nearly impossible — not ideal after a long day of travel.
If you’re planning to stay here, be prepared for noise, heat, and very basic facilities.”

Central, quiet actually, quaint and famous!,, Queen Elizabeth stayed in our very room in the early ‘50’s when she and Phillip were on their world tour after her Coronation.
It was fine. It was an old and stylish building and was clean. 6

The room was comfortable and the location was excellent being a kilometre from the main centre. I was disappointed the room wasn't ready on time.
They need to provide bottled water for the jug. That's all

Very tired, very uncomfortable and extremely noisy

Clean and comfortable and good value for money
Quite alot of street noise and no air conditioning

I liked the little amenities of the room, such as the free coffees and tea packets in the room. The staff were polite and asked me if I wanted extra towels, even though they didn't have to offer that. There's also a fan and a heater in the room, though I doubt Whangārei would ever get cold enough for a heater!
I'd say the only real issue is that there is a surcharge added to the fee, which makes the room roughly 30% more expensive than needed. The room was nice but given the surcharge, it was a bit overpriced.

Nothing
Dirty, had to go to the bar to check in, rooms over the bar karaoke until 2am, no security rough part of town. Carpet on the walls in the bathroom. Beautiful building needs a serious overhaul. Not safe for single Travellers. Expensive for what you get.

The character of the accommodation area
We paid extra for the balcony which was huge but there was only one small chair so we didn’t use it

I needed an overnight stay before heading to Kaitaia since Air NZ doesn't fly to Kaitaia. Accomodation had all my requirements. Lovely staff, especially on meeting my nephew whom I didn't know was up in Whangarei from Auckland.
A noisy group of men who were staying. LOud voices and a constant banging of something on wood next to my room. Nevertheless I still got to sleep, and had a reasonable sleep.

I liked the Grand Hotel holds Majestic merit that it showed it has been truely long lived in The Grand Hotel gave me comfort and security where ever i was traveling in and out of this building
Its location is perfect Its entertainment and food support valuable
Though i was booked in for 3 days of leisure i did not indulge in the finer cuisines and entertainment down stairs and in the local beer bar I found i was comfortable to come and go to work at leisure
My stay was perfect certainly I will return and i give her a Grand total of 5 out of five stars well done Well done The Grand Hotel
for me thats a no brainer and not applicable to me

Price and location were great
A bit old and antiquated, but the price reflects that

Love the old building so much.
For such a beautiful building the 3am karaoke being so loud it's impossible to sleep, wish I had known. Nothing you can do apart from wait until 3am to go to sleep.

A bit dated but so clean

Location
The demand from management for late checkout, this was never advised on checkin despite telling the checkout time.
If known of extra charges I would have looked for other places. Hotel doesn’t have a reception and operated by a bar attendant. Request for taxi service as well

Been staying here for years.
Staff are friendly.
Rooms are clean.
Very affordable.
Close to eateries.
Stayed on a Friday night - got up early Saturday morning and walked two minutes over the road to the markets for fresh veggies, fruits, fish, meat, plants and coffee before heading back up North.
Can get noisy if there's a band on, but that's what you'd expect - it's a hotel/pub in the middle of town. You can pop down for a drink if you like. It's a lovely historical old building with a beautiful staircase. Warm and comfortable to stay in.

Very good value for money, and central to Whangārei town
Loud karaoke from the bar on the ground floor, 4 nights in a row, that went on very late.

We stayed because it is a beautiful historic hotel
A little run down now but still can imagine what it was like when the queen stayed
The amenities are basic but comfortable and clean

Clean. Warm. Convenient. Nice staircase. The later staff we dealt with nice and friendly
Old. Run down. Original staff booking us in had poor social skills

Listed 'with parking', there was no free parking, no on site parking, which for central Whangarei is definitely a plus. I was told to park outside but move my car before 8am.
Also roomservice knocking on my door before 8am asking if I needed clean linen was a bit off really. Particularly on my first night.
I travelled Northlands for two weeks and this was the only place asking for my home address, they had a copy of my driver license why my home address? I don't want to share all my information with people.
I felt ill at ease from the moment I got there.
Will never stay again and would not recommend ever.

Friendly staff, location, PRICE, ease of getting in/out (very early start), beautiful retro staircase, historical write up in room
