São Vicente House

We rented the 2 bedroom apartment. There is a separate apartment below. It was clean and comfortable. The 2nd floor gets pretty warm throughout the day, but the AC worked well, but we also opened the windows for a nice breeze. The king bed was comfy. There was vey little outside noise. It is a convenient location between Alfalma and Graca… right next to the Monastery St. Vincent de Fora, which was where we always navigated to. There are 3-4 Miradouros ( viewpoints) within a 10-15 min walk. Too many restaurants to choose from. Don’t miss the huge flea market on Saturdays… literally half a block away. The Tram 28 line is at the corner and also plenty of Tuk Tuks and Uber/Bolt. It’s about a 10-15 minute walk to the Apalonia train station ( hills and cobblestones! ). If you drive, be aware that the driveway is steep with a sharp turn that most folks back down ( tricky). The host Vicente was very responsive.

The only drawback for us was the bathroom. The clawfoot tub is nice, but the setup with the fixtures and curtains made it a bit cramped ( we are normal sized folks). You have to be really careful getting in and out. The granite sink design was interesting, but the faucet was tricky and always splashed when it was turned on. It is functional once you get used to it.

We stayed in the one bedroom, ground level apartment. The apartment is well situated on the high side of the Alfama district of Lisbon. It is spacious. There a many restaurants, bars and hole-in-the-wall shops to discover in the tiny, steep streets. It is close to Santa Apolonia station, and very close to the no. 28 tram which takes you into the town. It is in a quiet location.

This is an old building and as the owner freely admits, is in need of major renovations. He is a nice person and has been sick, but the apartment has not been maintained. The towels and bed linen are old ,( not nice) and need to be replaced- easy to do! The appliances are old, broken or simply not working 😕. ( I hope the owner fixes the air-conditioner before the summer, because even in October, this place gets hot.) People with mobility problems would find it difficult walking up the steep driveway and also negotiating the split-level apartment. (You need to go up and down a step to get in and out of the front door, bedroom, kitchen and even the toilet suite inside the bathroom. ) The TV is small, there is no cable service, it is dark. In my opinion it is in a good location, and spacious, but not worth the high rating. I think the "fabulous" reviews are for his other property.
