Guesthouse Takayama Hanzansha

Traditional Japanese guesthouse with Japanese style rooms with plenty of storage. Quiet and in a lovely location.

The sinks are in the same room as the shower so it’ll someone was showering you has to use the sink in the kitchen. Minor inconvenience and not at all detracting from the charm of the guesthouse.

The house was not full when we were there.

Very limited facilities, I walk up the hill to get there, two bathrooms and showers shared between potentially 15 people. Cash only payments accepted.

The house is on the top of a small hill close to Takayama's old quarters, but it's not difficult to get there. The traditional room was gorgeous and the futons were comfortable. Hanzansha was welcoming and graciously waited for our arrival even though we got there a little later than expected. There was a kitchenette available. Everything was very clean.

The shared bathrooms are not well laid out. If you want to wash your face or brush your teeth, you either have to use the tiny sink above the individual toilets, which tends to splash water everywhere, or go into the kitchen to use the sink. Walls were quite thin and we could hear everything from the other rooms, but this is understandable since it's a traditional house.

A guest house in a convenient location, very quiet yet close to the centre, with a good price in winter. Beautiful views.

The heating was very sporadic, even though temperatures outside were well below 0°C. The heaters seemed quite old, and there were signs everywhere warning to turn them off when leaving due to fire risk, which was a little worrying. The one in the living room started beeping after only an hour of use. Both we and other guests were quite cold. The bathroom wasn’t particularly clean—there was hair in the shower drain—and there was only one toilet for the entire property. Additionally, the main front door doesn’t close properly; a key or pin system might be worth considering for security and convenience.
