Hotel Portofino

First mentions must go to the gentleman who was on the desk when we arrived and the lady who sorted breakfast. Both were very polite, friendly and helpful. The hotel was in a great location close to the sea front and a reasonably easy walk from the railway station. All the rooms are on the first floor of a 19th century building (there is a lift) and are perhaps best described as having faded grandeur; their historic nature added character and interest, but if you want a modern hotel, this is probably not for you. That said, the room was clean and comfortable and the shower decent. Breakfast was good.

The entrance is easy to miss; a small, low-key sign mounted relatively low at the entrance. We walked past it twice before we saw it, but perhaps that was us. The only real irritation was that breakfast didn't start until 8.00 am, which meant that we had to miss it to catch our train when we moved on, but for most guests, that would probably be fine.

Bathrooms desperately need updating as every flush of the toilet was very noisy. Too many varieties of cake for breakfast. Be better to add muesli/granola and some other fruit like bananas and melon.

We loved this place. It feels like an authentic Italian stay. The room was filled with light. The people were lovely. The breakfast was great. They have a relationship with a local waterfront restaurant where you get 20% off, which was fantastic too! I would recommend it to anyone.

The bathrooms are slightly outdated, and could use upgrading, but it wasn’t a major at all. There wasn’t a mini fridge or kitchenette in the room we stayed in - that would have been a helpful addition.
