A magical place, that's slightly crumbling, but that's OK as it's part of the charm.

There's magic in this hotel. One feels transported 100 or at least 80-70 years back in time, it is an art-nouveau gem, a capsule in time, with fantastic ambiance and beautiful interiors. The staff are extremely helpful and polite, giving a service much more appropriate for a 5 star establishment, and not a 3 star one - the status the hotel has now. Just looking out of the gigantic windows in the bar/foyer onto the fading light upon the mountains, while listening to Chopin being played on the piano and fire crackling in the fire place, sunbathing on the balcony, wandering the halls of the hotel and experiencing the "Magic Mountain" vibes is worth every penny! The breakfast was also amazing with plenty to choose from. And coming on and off the mountain via the hotel's funicular was something straight out of Wes Anderson's Grand Budapest hotel, which I feel the Schatzalp heavily inspired, just like it did Thomas Mann 100 years ago.

So just be aware that this hotel requires a lot of imagination as it is in fact crumbling. There are no modern amenities of any king - even the radios in the rooms are at least 50 years old. It is all quite charming in fact, but for example all the rooms (even if clean) smell of the 100 000 of guests that passed through them through the ages (they are carpeted so small wonder). The family that owns the hotel stopped investing in it probably in the 70s (this was when our room was updated) and it really shows. Also - be aware that all rooms are different and that what you book on booking.com might differ from what you get (I booked something that looked like a charming room full of antiques and got a 70's room instead - it was fine, as the view from the balcony was great, but keep it in mind). Also - this is not a criticism, but if there isn't enough snow the private ski lifts are unusable (they do not have the ability to put artificial snow on the hotel's slopes) and also the sledge run gets closed for safety reasons. Make sure you take all this into consideration when booking. Also if this hotel were to be renovated the prices would make it unaffordable for mere mortals.

We really liked the atmosphere of the hotel. Location is perfect. We really enjoyed walking around the hotel and the botaniums were fantastic. Restaurant was fine.

We enjoyed this classic Swiss hotel, but we did not like the unpleasant smell of the old room.

Magic hotel from a lost era with wonderful views, friendly staff and unique interior

This hotel provides the rare experience of traveling back in time, with exquisite original furnishings and lavish interiors from a bygone time. Everyone familiar with Mann’s the magic mountain, will immediately recognize the inspirational material, and soon find him/herself on the «horizontal» position, enjoying the wonderful view, and possibly enjoying a Maria Mancini, walking in the footsteps of Hans Castorp. My stay was magical, and i look forward to coming back

As the hotel is old, the condition of the hotel in some places may not be up to modern standards. However, this is part of the historic charm, and is in no way any meaningful disturbance

Exceptional

Again perfect stay at this great historic hotel. Very friendly and helpful staff. hotel is not in Davos, which ensures fresh air, quietness and great views. To get there, you need to take the funicular, cable railway (fee included in the overnight cost). Separate parking area paid additionally within walking distance from the cable railway. Everything is well maintained and clean, you can see the age and past glory which gives the hotel very unique character and atmosphere.

Good enough breakfast buffet. Sorry that Panorama restaurant was not opened.

Lovely “vintage” hotel with great views.

Beautiful location. Old but well maintained building and room. Like stepping back in time! Great dinner and breakfast. Good opportunities for walking.

There was a party event on the evening I stayed. I stayed on the 1st floor and couldn’t sleep even with ear plugs due to the bass. The staff were very accommodating and I was able to move to another room which was better. I would request a room on the 2nd floor in future to avoid such a problem.

Lovely staff truly kind accommodating flexible informative beautiful people. Gorgeous building and surroundings...breathtaking views, excellent location to go on hikes, and it has 2 botanical gardens too - it is a piece of heaven on Earth!!!!!

View from the hotel was great! Breakfast spread was good. The included premium pass and toboggan were really great! Hotel staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is interesting enough to visit on its own.

Room had no view. Room only had one chair but two persons staying. Rooms also had (understandably) no kettles so we needed to go to the bar for hot water each time. Beds were a little too soft for preference.

A very special location!

Wonderful buffet breakfast, in the beautiful Belle Epoque dining room with spectacular views - best way to start the day! Open fire burning in the evening in the bar. All the bedrooms have amazing views of the mountains in Davos, with loungers to rest in the sun. Access is by the funicular railway. This is a very special place and location. We loved the 5km sledge run right from the hotel door!

Unfortunately we didn't get the dog bowl we had asked for, and our luggage was brought down the funicular late so we missed the train that we had booked tickets on. These were inconveniences but we still loved our stay - the hotel resolved the issue by refunding us the cost of additional train tickets.

It’s an expensive place but worth each penny!

It’s a unique place not only because of Magic Mountain by T.Mann (but it would be a lie to say it’s not an important part of its charm). For staying here you don’t have to be a fan of Mann’s novel, but I think it helps to feel the atmosphere of the place and appreciate the style. It’s like being in the novel, living in a museum (but in a very positive way - when renovating, please keep the old structure and character of the place) surrounded by astonishing nature. We parked and were taken by a cable car immediately upon arrival. Nice and big room with a working space, with a comfortable bed are well enough equipped. WiFi is good. Very good breakfast with fresh vegetables and fruits. Two elevators. Friendly service. Fantastic terrace with the most amazing view over Davos and mountains, as well as room verandas (where I could spend a half of a day just reading and relaxing). Hotel offers a sauna, bar and a restaurant. Very close to the main building there are another two restaurants.

We liked everything! Just to note in the rooms there are no tea/coffee making facilities.

Magic Mountain

This is an old fashioned convalescent home / hotel and be prepared that this is not a brand new hotel chain member. But if you are looking for the magic of the Magic Mountain of Thomas Mann, this is the place. We got under the spell immediately. Note that it is not possible to get there with a car! You need to leave the car at a car park near the funicular station and get to the hotel with such funicular (which adds the flavour). The botanical garden is amazing.

Too pricely for experience you get back

As per bad experience we got, there is few things I liked: 1. Live music in bar area with woman playing piano 2. Bar area in general with fire place and people gatherings 3. Saunas. You have 3 different saunas for use. 4. Half of stuff was pleasant. The rest shouldn't work in service. 5. Breakfasts which were open table with options for vegetarians and rice or soya milk if you are vegan.

Hotel is too expensive with general poor experience for the value it can gives: 1. PARKING: Parking is paid separately - I would expect it having free as we paid couple of hundreds for 2 nights 2. DRESS CODE: If you don't have fancy clothes during the dinner you are being sat at the end of the dining area behind the column so you are not being seen by the others 3. FOOD: food has just no taste! Red Thai curry came as brown hard to explain dish which tasted as unfrozen vegetables. The rest of ordered food looked nice but also had no taste. 4. TRANSPORT: you have two ways to reach the hotel, by foot which is around 45 minutes walk up hill or by hotel train which goes every 30 minutes!! It's insane! Our bus was late so we didn't make it to the train depart so we had to wait 26 minutes in -2°C. Plan your schedule well... 5. GENERAL: hotel had its good times until maybe 40 years ago. Everything now is old and smell like my grandpa. This hotel is calling for renovation and pictures on Booking are 10 times better than reality.

Hier muss man gewesen sein!

Schon die Ankunft an der Standseilbahn ist ein Erlebnis. Oben angekommen taucht man ein in eine andere Welt. Hier muss man gewesen sein, man taucht ein in eine vergangene Zeit, der Speisesaal ist wunderschön, die Blumen auf der Terrasse, die historischen Gesundheitsliegen auf dem Balkon!!! Das Essen ist köstlich und das Personal im ganzen Haus wirklich sehr aufmerksam. Der weite Ausblick ins Tal und die Ruhe hier oben sind unvergesslich.

Das finstere Parkhaus. Der Ort Davos ist, ausgenommen das ein oder andere Hotel, eine hässliche und uncharmante Betonwüste. Der Eintritt ins Kirchnermuseum viel zu teuer.

Eine Ruheoase

Ein stilvolles, historisches Hotel an einem wunderbaren Ort mit grandioser Aussicht. Die Zimmer sind mit viel Liebe hergerichtet, man wähnt sich in einer anderen Zeit. Ein Ort voller Ruhe und Erholung. Das Frühstücksbuffet lässt keine Wünsche offen. Sympatisch war auch, dass die übrig gebliebenen Kuchen einer Hochzeit serviert wurden und nicht einfach im Abfall landeten. Die Kuchen waren unglaublich lecker☺️

Dass es beim Abendessen nicht möglich ist, aus einem Menu einzelne Gänge zu wählen, hat mich enttäuscht. Das sollte doch wie in anderen Restaurants auch möglich sein.

Ein toller wunderbarer Kraftort in einem geschichtsträchtigen Hotel.

Außergewöhnlicher Ort, man spürt dort oben den Geist und die Epoche vergangener Zeiten. Ein Kraftort der Ruhe und Erholung.

Das über Booking Com gebuchte Zimmer hatte mir nicht gefallen. Daher hatte ich vor Ort ein Upgrade von 50 CHF zusätzlich täglich zu dem schon bezahlten Zimmerpreis - der nicht niedrig lag - vorgenommen. Das Zimmer was ich bekommen sollte entsprach nicht dem Bild bei Booking Com. Durch das Upgrade mit zusätzlichen Kosten für mich war ich sehr zufrieden.

Die Schatzalp ist ein Juwel, das man gesehen, gefühlt, geschmeckt haben muss. Alles ist einzigartig, vom plüschbezogenen Fahrstuhl bis zum atemberaubenden Bergblick. Das Frühstück ist köstlich und der Service allgemein ausgezeichnet. Jederzeit wieder !

Sehr angenehmer, entspannter Aufenthalt in historischer Ambiance und wunderschöner Umgebung! Das Frühstück war sehr reichhaltig, der Service allgemein sehr aufmerksam und freundlich. Die Speisen im Restaurant Belle Epoche sind ausgezeichnet. Auch im Restaurant Panorama haben wir gut gegessen, wenn auch der Knoblauch im Fondue gefehlt hat. Gefreut hat mich, dass die Küche (vorwiegend arbeiten dort Portugiesen) meinen Input betreffend dem fehlenden Knoblauch aufgenommen hat und das Fondue seither anscheinend mit Knoblauch serviert wird :-). Die Zimmer sind sehr schön und im Jugendstil eingerichtet wie auch das ganze Hotel, welches früher ein Sanatorium war. Wir hatten einen schönen grossen Balkon mit Sicht auf die Berge und ins Tal, wo sich Davos Platz befindet. Das Bähnchen fährt bis um Mitternacht nach oben und nach unten. Das heisst, man kann auch am Abend problemlos nach Davos Platz zBsp Essen gehen und dann mit dem Bähnchen wieder nach oben ins Hotel. Der Eingang ins Hotel befindet sich direkt neben der Bergstation. Ebenfalls sehr empfehlenswert: Die Wanderwege und Skipisten, direkt angrenzend ans Hotel. Dabei ist die Schlittelpiste mit einer Länge von über 3 km bis hinunter nach Davos Platz "einfach geil! Freude bereitet haben mir zudem die drei Hotelkatzen, welche ab und zu draussen ums Hotel oder hinter der Rezeption im Körbchen zu sehen waren. Das Hotel bietet für Hotelgäste auch kostenlos Führungen an, welche über den Ursprung des Hotels als ehemaliges Sanatorium Aufschluss geben - diese Führung war sehr interessant und kann ich wärmstens empfehlen. Ich würde das Hotel jederzeit wieder buchen und kann es bestens empfehlen.

Alles bestens. Gut zu wissen, falls man im Sommer geht und gerne einen kühlen Weisswein auf dem Zimmerbalkon geniessen möchte: Es hat keinen Kühlschrank/keine Minibar im Zimmer. Aber das ist ein Detail, welches angesichts des schönen Hotels und Aufenthalts nicht ins Gewicht fällt. Zudem hat man die Gelegenheit, im Restaurant/an der Hotelbar ein kühles Glas Weisswein zu bestellen, wo sich ebenfalls eine wunderschöne Sonnenterasse befindet. Gut zu wissen für im Winter: Das Hotel hat ein Dampfbad und zwei Saunen, wenn auch kein Spa-Bereich und kein Massageservice

Eine schöne Zeit auf der Schatzalp mit Sauna, Wandern und Schlitteln.

Wir hatten eine gute Zeit. Das Hotel ist historisch, das spürt man in jeder Ecke. Wir genossen die schönen Saunen, fuhren Schlitten, nutzen die kostenlose Seilbahn und wanderten den Strelapass. Das Frühstück war ausgiebig, die Restaurants im Hotel gut und das Personal herzlich.

Die Balkone benötigen sanfte Renovierungen. Die Zimmer sind nicht gerade günstig und man bekommt dafür einiges geboten, aber einige Zimmer entsprechen nicht ganz den Versprechungen auf den Bildern.

Wasserflaschen war knapp. Die Weingläser wurden in meiner Abwesenheit aufgefüllt obwohl ich 3 x abwehrte. Schade, viele Weingläser waren voll, obwohl 2.00h morgens war. Die Kerzen von allen Tischen habe ich 3.00h morgens aufgeblasen.
