La Maison de la Rose

De locatie is super, meer kan je gewoon niet zeggen. Dat is eigenlijk alles voor het huis. De plek, het uitzicht en een stadje aan de zee.

Without a doubt, the highlight of this place is the view from the window—it’s absolutely breathtaking. We visited in March, before the trees had fully come into leaf, so alongside the stunning cliffs and ocean we also had a clear view of the cemetery below. Although the apartment is relatively spacious, the kitchen is little more than a small corner, and finding utensils turned into a bit of a treasure hunt. In particular, the forks, spoons, and knives were hidden inside a table in the living area, something that wasn’t mentioned in the instructions. The bathroom is accessed through the bedroom, but despite its compact size, it is surprisingly comfortable. The recessed walk-in shower is a very practical and well-designed feature. Finally, the host was kind enough to let us check in a little earlier, which we really appreciated.

The biggest drawback was the extremely poor sound insulation. We stayed on the second floor and could clearly hear neighbours both above and below us—their footsteps, conversations, sneezes, laughter, and virtually every other sound. There was also a noticeable musty, stale smell throughout the property, which was not particularly pleasant. One thing that left us wondering was the cleaning process. After our neighbours checked out, a woman arrived, spent most of the time talking on the phone while briefly checking cupboards, and left after about 15 minutes. Given the level of sound insulation, we are fairly certain no vacuum cleaner or thorough cleaning took place during that time. We sincerely hope the apartment was properly cleaned later while we were out, as new guests had already arrived by the time we returned.

The views are fantastic, the area is quiet and peaceful, and the building is interesting. The location is within a short walking distance to Etretat cliffs. Communication with the host was easy.

The apartment is in the old villa, with some updates done, mostly to the bathroom and the windows, but otherwise the place is run down and needs a lot of work and proper cleaning (e.g. carpets are very old, closets are cluttered with dirty cleaning supplies, there are cracks and peeling paint on the walls, lots of insects around, the floors, tables and counters are sticky, the towels are stained). The kitchen is so tiny that all dishes and small appliances are set up in the living room closets. The place is usable for a night or two but uncomfortable, I would not stay there until it's renovated and cleaned properly. Hospitality is low effort: no toiletries except for hand soap, no fan during heatwave, extremely slow internet.
