The air conditioning worked very well. It was clean.

The monkeys are a bit scary on the roof and balconies. But that is part of being in the jungle. The luxury room bathroom is down some stairs, so not so convenient at night. The small loft bed in that room also is not really good. The pillow on that small bed had black mould - so advisable to check the pillows.

We stayed at Sam's Bungalows for 5 nights and it was wonderful. Staff is very nice and accommodating. We did a two-day trek with the amazing guide Said Kebo, who is extremely experienced, kind and overall the best guide we could wish for. At first when booking we were concerned that the location was outside of the city center, but in fact, the street it is located in is the best street for tourists with direct access to the river and a nice hiking path along the river, where you can also take a swim. In other words: the location is actually perfect. Thanks a lot!

Beautiful place along the river, very relaxing and cosy overlooking the jungle across the river. Rooms are spacious and clean. Food in the restaurant very delicious. Monkeys running around all felt very natural and nice to see

Nothing it was perfect

We absolutely loved our stay at Sam’s Bungalows and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Bukit Lawang. The location is really special. Sam’s is right at the far end of the village, where – unlike in many other parts of Bukit Lawang – the opposite side of the river is still completely untouched jungle. From both the rooms and the restaurant you have beautiful views over the river and rainforest. In the mornings we watched monkeys moving through the trees across the river, while in the evenings the restaurant is a lovely place to have dinner, enjoy a drink and take in the surroundings. Our Panorama Room was clean, spacious and very comfortable, with a great veranda overlooking the jungle. Having a warm bath in the middle of the rainforest felt like quite a luxury! The food was excellent as well, both Indonesian and Western. Breakfast with their homemade bread was especially good and you can really tell that care goes into the food. We also booked our jungle trek through Sam’s and had Gia and Parwan as our guides. Both were extremely knowledgeable about the rainforest and wildlife, while also being funny, easy-going and great company. Trekking through the jungle and rafting back down the river afterwards was an absolute highlight of our time in Sumatra. What really makes Sam’s stand out, though, are Sam and his staff. Everyone is incredibly warm, welcoming and helpful. Sam is a great person to talk to if you want to learn more about Bukit Lawang, the rainforest and how the area has changed over the years. We also really appreciated how eco-aware they are and how much they care about protecting this special place so future generations can continue to enjoy it. Their hospitality really showed on our final morning. After I had been ill during the night, we were due to leave with our transfer in less than an hour.
