Quinta da Travessa - Douro

This is a Quinta that’s been in the family for generations - loved the personal aspect of staying here plus the old stone structure, historical feeling of the place. There’s a nice breakfast included and you can request dinner as well. The saltwater pool was fabulous and it was great to have A/C in room during warm nites. And of course there is Nuno - the most excellent host who is also a vintner, produces olive oil, and has groves of orange trees on the property.

I actually loved everything. One thing to be aware of is once you are there - you’ll want to take the local train to visit Pinhão or Régua. Covelinhas, (a tiny town with no amenities except a riverside bar/cafe overlooking the river near the train station) is on the river’s north side - the main road runs along the river on the opposite side. It’s a super short walk to the station and the cafe has surprisingly tasty food, snacks and fresh beer on tap. I loved hopping on the train every day, going in different directions, (Covelinhas is in between Régua and Pinhão) and exploring them and the wineries nearby. It was very hot when I visited in June, so jumping in the pool evenings when I returned, before dinner was great.

Restful, quiet, lovely pool, parking in the shade. 15 minute walk to the train station if you want to go to Pinhao or Regua but not drive (40 minutes to Pinhao). Breakfast included and dinner (30 euro each) is optional. In June/July/August there is a “cafe” near the train station where you can have lunch. Room was comfortable and the AC worked well. We had one of two upstairs rooms and the floor was squeaky. We were concerned about the people in the downstairs room but were told by our host that the floor squeaks do not transmit to the people below.

Not actually an issue but giving clarity to other reviewers regarding the road. It is 6.5 km from the bridge over the Douro to Covelinhas. The road is mostly 1 ½ lanes wide and curvy, with poor sight lines and a drop off on one side. There is very little traffic but don’t count on meeting none. There are a couple of places where passing another car is NOT possible and someone will have to back up.

I had an amazing experience thanks to the wonderful host, who was incredibly helpful. Huge compliments to the lady cooking the meals—both breakfast and dinner were absolutely delicious.

Dinner meal was good but the dining area was very hot. No air conditioning. Traveling on the narrow barely 1-lane road was quite upsetting for my wife. We booked our stay for 2 nights but only stayed 1 night.

We had a suite but no AC. Very hard to shower with the steam not being removed.
