Tunnel Gap Homestay

We liked the breakfast a lot because it was a break from the continuous Sri Lankan breakfasts that are offered in homestays a bit far from the city. The location was good, just outside the city, a 2-5 min walk from the city. They have such cute dogs. The hosts are really nice. The room interior was nice. But don't book the deluxe rooms (there are two), book the budget ones that are far from the roads.

We booked a deluxe room but it felt average for the price. The washroom facilities were bad. The commode leaked water so we had to turn off the main line. It didn't feel like a sudden issue. The floor design was bad so it was always full of water, so I had to periodically clean it. There were some bloodworms too. The door lock was such a bad one. It's exposed, greezy, and I got hurt multiple times trying to lock the door due to stupid design. There is a sitting area right in front of the rooms. But you can't sit there or have food due to lots of flies, fruit flies, etc. they can't do anything about it as it's not under their control. But such limitations should have been overcome by room facilities. It's still a good option. I like the sweet host. Hope they improve so I can come back.

The hospitality from our host Sudha was exceptional. This was more than accomodation, we experienced a true homestay. The breakfast and the cooking classes were standouts. The setting of the homestay next to the tea plantations was so scenic and such a convenient location in town too. Would highly reccommend for anyone who appreciated the opportunity to connect with a local and enjoy a relaxing and comfortable stay.

The place is super close to the train station, and the house dog is really sweet. We got welcome tee and borrowed an umbrella.

The whole room smelled bad — mouldy and just unhealthy — including the pillows, the bed, and the bathroom. The bathroom was also dirty, which made it even worse. The bed was uncomfortable and too short for me, and the mosquito net was the awkward kind that hangs down and makes the small sleeping space feel even more cramped. There was even a little sign on the wall saying not to expect much from a budget room. I’ve stayed in plenty of budget hostels and homestays before, and this place was well below standard. I know accommodation in Ella is pricey, but even if this place cost 3000 a night, I’d give it a max 7 out of 10 — definitely not worth a higher rating.
