The rooms were amazing. Huge and spectacularly decorated. The bathrooms were epic, with stone carved walls, statues, and massive stone bathtubs. There are secret passages behind bookshelves and trapdoors. A real life adventure. The outlook over the gardens and fish ponds were great. The property is carved into a cliff on the riverbank. It is tucked away in a quiet alcove with the hustle and bustle of the nearby main road seeming like it was a million miles away. All you can hear is the river, birds and frogs. The staff were attentive and friendly, the food, cocktails and service fantastic. The massages were amazing. The gardens and pools were clean and well maintained. The fire show and spice meal at the restaurant next door was a highlight and quite an advenure - The Oracle of Spice. The surrounding coffee shops and warungs were fun to visit while exploring the area on foot. Ubud was a short 15 minute ride or drive away. Overall amazing place to stay and would highly recommend.
Nothing, it was fantastic. There are lots of stairs, so I wouldn't recommend for anyone with mobility issues.

The castle is nestled in secluded yet not far from center of attractions. It was quite and surrounded with lush garden and nature. I went and spent sometime at the back where the small tiered pools were right next to the river, listening the water streams. I would come back again to stay here. Rooms were spacious and we got the suite with door in our bathroom leading to the small pool, it was soo cool!
The staffs were sweet and catered our needs.
The stairs going back up from our ground to the lobby/castle entrance! I guess I'm not that fit! Because my kids found no trouble with it

Extremely quirky hotel with the addition of Oracle of Spice restaurant and show in the grounds. Meeting the owner; Arthur, and being shown around by him brings an added dimension to the resort!
Any negatives outshine by quirkyness!

This is a magical place with incredible pools, hot tub, sculptures, decor, gardens, creativity, and a neighboring performance show call Lumeria. We thoroughly enjoyed floating breakfasts in the pool and the room was spacious and comfortable. The staff was sweet and took care of our needs. We also enjoyed a dinner on our front porch and marveled at the library. It was easy to order food and drinks by phone and have it delivered nearly anywhere on the property.
Our room unfortunately didn’t have any hot water, despite having a bath tub, but we didn’t ask to reconcile it because we wanted to maximize our short time there so that’s on us. The curtains are semi-transparent and don’t fully cover the many windows so we often felt a bit exposed, though didn’t mind it personally. We also noticed droppings accumulating on the couch so may have been a roaming rodent. Lastly, the WiFi was a bit intermittent, but functioned most of the time.

Such a beautiful place, the overall grounds and the cabin were amazing.
I have nothing bad to say about this place!

On 2nd day, we changed rooms which were good- as we enjoyed our stay and staff also helped us to heat our food.
Staff is polite and courteous.
Avalon castle & spa is a heritage property having high roofs & lot of artifacts to capture your attention. The property requires high maintenance - be it bathrooms; balcony or even the live kitchen. Dust & termites are seemingly visible. The junior suits which had tubs and nice open shower wasn’t even in a condition where we could take shower - there were frogs, centipedes - which made us not use of any of the utilities.

Unique architecture and concept. The room was spacious, and the pools by the river were nice.
The bed linen was poor for a suite, and the curtains did not block out light effectively. The room was not very clean (spider webs in several areas). The gas in the kitchen was not working, and the issue was not fixed. The room and furniture look old and need renovation. Water pressure in the bathroom was poor.

Wow! All I can say is this niche place was such a good find! We booked last minute and so glad we did . Make sure you take the time to explore the grounds. A hidden gem .
That we didn’t book more nights!!

the staff were all so friendly and helpful, the place itself was stunning.
the pool was a nice temperature and it was really cool with all the plants around, it made the place feel like it was out in the forest. the location was amazing; I highly recommend the restaurant and if you want a change up the place across the road from the restaurant was top tire.
honestly the place was amazing and i have no bad things to say about it.

We loved our villa, the spring water pools, the interactive show was simply amazing , the storytelling about Atlantis and Balinese dancers were spectacular and the Eye of spice bar and dinner was unique. The cocktails were the best we have ever had anywhere. The host was very welcoming and the whole place was interesting and unique. We are so thrilled to have stayed there. We watched white water rafters go down the river from the pools. A beautiful stay.
There was nothing we didn’t like. We have told our family and friends about it.

Breakfast was amazing as were the facilities ! Incredible hotel- we stayed in the 2 bedroom villa with the study and lounge area these rooms a little dark at times as it’s behind the bedrooms as the villa was huge and so spacious . Pools amazing and spa was lovely
Some people mentioned bugs? Can’t really help that, I didn’t find that there were too many bugs or mosquitoes considering the location. We saw a few frogs but I’m from Australia so we are used to creepy crawlies !

The family are lovely and super helpful, nothing is too much trouble.
My room once I switched from riverside villa (way too small for me) to the orange 1 room was super comfortable bed and nice and spacious with an extravagant beautiful bathroom.
The lights from around the pools shone directly into my bedroom so it was like daylight and I had to ask them to turn off, which sometimes they did.
The noise from the main reception area and lobby is directly above so can get noisy. But the dining area isnt in use, what would be knights of round table is just sat idle with stuff, resembling a Christmas tree on the ground making the space not usable.
The concept of the resort is beautiful, however it desperately needs some TLC, maintenance is needed and broken furniture scattered around the grounds makes it feel old and cluttered and unloved.
The hot spa wasnt hot and it didnt do. The cold plunge wasnt cold either. Neither were very appealing to me unfortunately, and the pools didnt draw me in either as workers although polite and quite quiet were working away next to it.
I thought there was a restaurant but its just room service which was disappointing as a solo traveller wanting company sometimes.
Had I gone here after other accommodation around ubud I would have given it a much higher rating because the value for money is excellent. If this was in its prime, it would be 4 times the price.
It wasnt walking distance to anything which again was hard for me.
I personally wouldn't stay again but the food was always nice, super efficient and friendly staff so if you're after good value and an interesting quirky place with hidden passages and surprises then do it. Just know its not a 4* hotel anymore.
Cleanliness and bedding could also do with an upgrade but I feel they dont make enough money to keep up with all the expenses on such a property.
Gratitude to the family, I hope they still get plenty of bookings. I've just been spoilt with lots of 5* stays so I could be overly picky.
Its not bad, its okay. Hope that helps those seeking. Oh and id say not good for little kids or elderly as steps everywhere and no safety around pools.
Thanks and all the best.

Crazy place, built by a couple from scratch. So much to look at it's like a fantasy island.
Service was good, food homely and the carvings and features awesome.
Not a problem for us but this is a little further out from Ubud central. Just keep in mind for day trips.

Great location and aesthetics, lovely pools and a picturesque property. Great food and service. The show was amazing 👏 a great place for a few days of rest.
Many, many stairs which can be exhausting if you come and go frequently or have bad knees.
Hot water wasn't great, and no drawers for clothing if staying awhile.

Not a lot but I will be fair from our experience the staff were brilliant especially the young lady at reception and the cleaners but unfortunately that's where it ends for us and we wish we never booked it in the first place.
So upon check in you have to order all food drinks motorbikes anything you want through an application they say this is to make it easier for us however it's a nightmare email, room name, where you want it and what time every time you want to order a food or drink is ridiculous and no staff will not accept any order from you they tell you to use the app! Once you have wasted 10 mins of your holiday ordering 1 drink, it then takes around 1 hour to arrive! 1 hour 30 was the longest we had to wait for 2 drinks it's a joke.... they say they use this app so you can order from the pool without the long walk up all the stairs for a drink but there's no QR codes to scan anywhere so the whole thing is pointless and you still have to find some one to give you the stupid barcode! It completely ruined our time in this area! It's described as a castle and looks okay on the pictures it isn't It's a glorified book shelf honestly stay away filter the results from lowest to highest before booking in wish we did! The bed was literally falling in bits there's a piece of paper covering the windows in the bathrooms but the creepy bit for us was there's cctv camers looking right into your room! From the trees seems very pervy to us! I'll add a photo as it's not right! The step to the bathroom nearly broke every time we used it. The air-conditioning just blew around hot air, we had to ask for a fan. This was also pointless as the plug sockets was miles away from anything! The bed sheets had massive stains on them, not usually one to leave a review like this but I genuinely think many of you about to book this will massively regret it! I don't know what room every one that's leaving good reviews is booking or what there smoking because it is unbearable we travel for 5 months every trip we do so we stay in good and bad not fussy at all but for the price of this for what you get you will be upset!

The staff were very friendly and genuinely seemed to want to help. The air con was very effective. Visually nice to look at but everything else let it down.
It’s an extremely remote location with nothing else around (my fault for not doing my research prior to booking). For the “included” breakfast you are allowed only two items each and a drink counts as an “item” So if you wanted something to eat, and a glass of juice and a coffee, you couldn’t.
You have to order all your food and drink via an app system, and last orders are at 20:30, so no food or drinks available after that. Given the remote location your only real choice is to eat there and the food is average at best.
The pool lights and pumps were shut off at 17:00 so you couldn’t go in the pool after that. The cold pool was also out of action for our stay so we couldn’t use that either.
Our bathroom roof had a crack and hole in the glass. And our gas bottle was empty on arrival so we had to get them to change it so that we could have hot water. I was really looking forward to staying here but have been bitterly disappointed.
Would not recommend.

Very different and interesting. Amazing show and dinner a must when there. Lovely clean pool and good food. Friendly staff. Beautiful gardens.
Bit far from shops.

The concept of the place is interesting and the photos available online are good.
The chicken and cheese Quesadillas, fries and watermelon juice were good and the pool was nice and cold.
The place was difficult to find and there aren't shops in walking distance. The wifi wasn't working and I couldn't access the menus for things which was explained on check in. To order a drink I had to leave my room to see reception to explain again that I couldn't access the menus to order food and demonstrate. Once I could order manually (by asking) I ordered a fresh lime juice, it arrived with an ant in it, I asked for a replacement which arrived warm. There was no tv remote in our room so we needed to return to reception to ask for one. Only one towel was provided for both the bathroom and the pool. I got sick after drinking the water provided in the room.
There were stains on the netting canopy on the bed. No bottles water was available and room service is available all hours.
Breakfast arrived with the knives and forks wrapped in tissues.
The water in the ponds either side of the pool had smelly stagnant murky water in them. There's fish in there but you can't see them. There's also wasp nests throughout the pool area.

Nothing
I’ve stayed at many hotels in Bali, so I have plenty to compare this one to — and it’s by far the worst option possible. The photos are absolutely misleading. When I first entered the room, it seemed fine at a glance, until I went into the bathroom. The hotel is basically falling apart and needs cleaning throughout the entire property. The bathroom was smelly and damp, the faucets were rusty, nails were sticking out of the floor, the baseboards and tiles had fallen off, the towels had holes, and the chair on the balcony was ready for the trash. The curtains don’t fully cover the windows and are semi-transparent. There’s no soundproofing at all — I could hear the neighbors clearly, and above my room was the lobby, where people kept walking around late into the night, making the glass shake from the vibration. I had to sleep with earplugs. The air conditioner was installed right above the head of the bed and blew directly onto my head.
The hotel is rated 4 stars, but maybe it was that way 10 years ago — definitely not now. The Wi-Fi only worked in the lobby. The pool area was dangerous to walk around; there was some kind of construction and everything was falling apart. The view of the river was beautiful, but the riverbanks were covered in trash. I really tried to find something positive about this hotel, but I couldn’t. The breakfast was okay though!
There are also wooden bungalows on the property that look relatively new — maybe staying there would be more comfortable. But I wouldn’t count on it.

Everything, photos and descriptions deceptive on advertising , room smelt bad, seating broken and dirty, food awful. We booked for 7 nights and left on the second day.

This was terrible, we ended up NOT staying because it was just not reasonable. This is not in Ubud, it is 50 mins away driving. There are zero facilities that work, including no hot water, and the bathroom was “open air” and filled with mosquitoes, which then filled the bedroom and there were no nets.
Staff was weird, we were told upon arrival to sit in the lobby, and repeatedly asked to order things off a menu, by multiple staff. The hot tub was covered, there was a “show” but it wasn’t included in the price of the stay. The sheets smelled like mold. It was so bad, we left 15 mins in.

We had a wonderful stay at Avalon from the moment we arrived. The staff went above and beyond to made us feel welcome.Special thanks go to the receptionist Via, drivers Angug and Wayan, and spa staff Ouchi and Citra. You may our stay unforgetable. Rooms are furnished to detail and housekeeping kept everything immaculate thoughout our stay. We highly recommend Avalon Castle Hotel and Spa for anyone looking for a comfortable and enjoyable stay with outstanding service.

The overall ambiance of this place was really good. The rooms we had were all good and pool at the room was good. The staff were great and very friendly.
They advertise that you can have a three bedroom villa which is what we ordered. We got three separate rooms as the three bedroom villa which were connected by common areas. It was not private at all. We paid for breakfast each day and were then told we could order two things from the breakfast menu for each person in our group. This included a drink. So you could only order one meal item with a drink. The orange juice advertised was around 250ml. We got a 150ml glass of orange juice. This place is full of steep stairs and not good if you have knee or other health issues. There was overall a lot of things wrong with this place that were not highlighted in the description on here. The main issue I feel is that they are allowed to advertise two and three bedroom villas which is misleading. When it says that it also includes breakfast, this I feel is also misleading.

The location was beautiful. We stayed in a 3 bedroom villa and it was stunning. The grounds and pools were so peaceful and relaxing.
The Indonesian restaurant, just off the grounds, was sensational. Best fresh food we ate in Bali. Such an intimate cultural experience.
You had to order all food and drinks via the App. Which would have been ok except that every night we lost wifi for several hours. You couldn't order anything any other way. It made it very difficult. We would try to find staff to help and they would offer us their phone to use. You could not actually just order from staff which was pretty frustrating.
7.0 / 10.0
The place is an absolute Wonderland. So magical, pools everywhere, hot tub, river , mini rainforest, wow. wow wow. Its magical , oh i already said that lol. Its like what Avalon would be, hence why its been constructed.
The food is amazing , staff are great, facilities are wow! the live show is a must see event and the feel of the place is second to none. You immerse yourself in the pools hot tub and the grandeur of the cliff side castle built into the stone cliff.
Secret passages and more , its uber interesting.
The Family is beautiful
The caveats ...
Some aspects of the room i was in and other maintenance issues were sub par.
Exposed electrical wiring, water in the room after rain storm, bathroom tap that spays your crotch if its on full, loud closing cupboard door, step after bathroom felt like it would break.
The underwater pool light was hanging underwater from its wiring.
I just feel like the lovely family and owners should spend a night in the sunset room , and maybe the others for 1 night, look at the place with a travellers eye so they can see the problems of their place. As when I told them about the issues, it was not attended to.
Except when The Tv would not work they let us use their extreme big screen with netflix , so thats a positive touch on their service.
It really is a beautiful creation, a place that I will return to.
This is all constructive criticism but I feel it still needs to be said.
otherwise it they fix these issues then ill return and rate 10

The hotel and gardens were magnificent, and the room and bed was large, and the staff friendly and helpful . the massage by the river was very professional and relaxing.
The bedroom lighting was not great and ordering food and drink had to be done by an app on line which made it a little tricky.
10.0 / 10.0
The staff super friendly, the bathroom was "quirky" to say the least, but great and spacious. Bed was comfortable. the spa and pool areas were amazing and luxurious. Facial was done in a cave and was sublime. Lots of interesting places to explore around the grounds. Super easy to order spa treatments/food/drinks from the app, and able to settler on departure, which made things so easy. Would definitely stay here again.
Balconies were kind of shared, and we could smell the cigarette smoke from the guests next door.

The massage therapist were excellent. The cleaners and other staff around about the place we were very friendly and helpful. It is a relaxing place.
The bathroom didn’t feel that clean. In the cottage, there are no hooks or hangers or draws to hang anything up. So you couldn’t unpack your clothes from your suitcase at all. There was a wardrobe but there were no hangers. There was nothing to hang a wet towel on so these just ended up on the couches or on the floor. There was only one chair at the big table so only one of us could sit down at any time. The massages were lovely but they didn’t bring the ginger tea which is supposed to be a part of the deal and is important for hydration after a massage.
When you arrive, you are given a piece of paper to sign that advises you about your responsibilities for breakages, losses and threats of bad reviews. This was a very negative way to start the visit.
There was a very nice long swimming pool, but there was only one cube table and one upright chair near this pool so you couldn’t really go there to relax. I did not like the use of the app for food. The breakfast was not enough even though it was included.

Bath tub and decors…
Facility was overrated. Compare to market it is expensive. Service quality and staff service were very low !
We stayed 7nights and pool never ever was clean !
Bed sheets, towels, bed, pillows and room was very old and smelly.
We used laundry, and they lost one of my shirt and damaged our clothes !
My wife used their saloon service and they damaged her nails and they charged to us this service !

Wow I really felt like a queen in my giant suite and I had a little secret door in my bathroom that gives immediately access to the swimming pool. That was quite funny. The beds are amazingly comfortable. I highly recommend the lumeria dîner and dance show. It’s a fantastic experience
I had a frog in my bathroom and later he jumped into my room. I couldn’t get rid off it but luckily he didn’t bother me during the night
