Poor, would not recommend

The property has a lovely old-y world-y feel which was lovely.

We were initially checked into the wrong room but the room itself was lovely. The room we were moved into felt like we had been downgraded and felt like we were staying in an attic rather than a hotel room. There was only one light just inside the door and then two lamps which wasn’t nearly enough light to get ready in. We were staying for a birthday party that had been booked at the venue. The food was very poor and the service was even worse. Miserable staff and no drinks service at the table, we had to keep making trips to the bar. There was no music in the room we had our meal and when we asked for some to be put on, the sound system wasn’t good at all. Overall, a very disappointing stay and certainly not with the money we paid to stay in a dark and dingy loft room with no light.

Location is great for me. I loved the mansion house itself and staff are great.

The setting is fab. Lovely mansion house with comfortable seating areas, garden and views. Staff were brilliant, very friendly and helpful. The location is ideal for me to be able to visit family and friends.

Room was so small with little surface areas for stuff, especially for the kettle. I’m a small person but even I struggled in the shower. Carpet in room needs cleaning. The building being historic was not decorated sympathetically to the era. Eg a lovely antique mounted mirror surround painted with green gloss paint! The cost, considering everything, is a little too much. Premier Inn close by is cheaper with much bigger rooms.

Good for location, average everything else.

Location to Durham was fantastic. The building was beautiful.

Bathroom was tiny; the toilet is squeezed against a wall and the shower so your legs are touching cold wall tiles which is uncomfortable. The shower is so tiny that once you’re in you can barely move your arms to wash yourself. While the bed is comfortable, I feel like I could hear everything going on in the hotel, and on Saturday night that included the village tavern next door and every conversation from everyone when they left.

Reasonable price for B&B in what is a lovely hotel. Room was well appointed, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was very good with great service in a nice breakfast room restaurant. Countryside location suited me as I was visiting family locally.

Warm and friendly

We loved our stay. The staff were so friendly and couldn't do enough for us. The room was comfy and clean. The little pub on the side was a gem, delightful selfie wall in the loo! Our evening meal and breakfast was lovely.

Good location. Lovely friendly receptionist. Room lovely size. Met family so booked Sunday lunch for 12 - exceptional food and great service and value for money.

It would have been helpful for staff to offer to carry the suitcase-bags up the stairs. Could not find bedside light switch. Also, signage to hotel was not clear. I phoned for directions but no answer.

We already knew that the venue was outside of town. But it's worth re-iterating that it's not really viable to rely on the bus service. Taxi into/from City will cost around £20-25

In a nice place. Plenty of parking! Room was clean and bed comfortable.

Room was ridiculously small, not just cozy. Checking in at night was a little hard work. Also after booking through Booking.com I was told the payment had declined even though I could see it had left my bank. Middle aged daytime receptionist was really rude!

Good value with easy access to Durham

Breakfast is excellent with a good menu of favourites. Had dinner both nights we stayed. Food is good 'pub style' generous portions and good. Room was compact - bed comfortable - carpet could do with a good clean. Bathroom okay - very compact (don't drop the soap in the shower) would be helpful to have hooks to hang up damp towels.

Carpet in the room desperately needs a deep clean.

It’s a beautiful site and watching the squirrels stashing nuts in the garden during breakfast was nice. The bathroom was good with a powerful well controlled shower and ample space for make up and wash kit

The first room we had was more like a broom cupboard. The second room was larger but lacked power sockets and storage. It was unsafe boiling a kettle next to the bed which was the only option as these were the only sockets (one side only). Without storage I was living from my suitcase and hurt myself moving it from under the eves to the bed to get clothes out . At least a folding suitcase stand would have helped.

Excellent breakfast, continental and made to order cooked options. Had a delicious dinner the first night. Lovely quiet rural location, but also very close to drive to Durham centre. Staff all really helpful and friendly. Very good value for quality of rooms, decor and the hotel is a beautiful building. Really comfy bed with lovely pillows. Great water pressure on shower.

As far as we are aware there isn't a lift to other floors, so this may be a problem for some guests.

It was alright

It had an old school inn hotel vibe.

It was very far form everything and was on a secluded area from where walking anywhere feels difficult. It is not in Durham exactly and is a 15 mins drive on a highway. And the property has no lift or elevator which makes going to the attic room which was assigned to me very difficult.

Not relaxing or pleasurable

It’s in a beautiful setting.

It was sold as tranquil setting where you can relax. This wasn’t the case. Our room was placed just over where a wedding reception was being held. There was a constant thud of music, which wasn’t pleasant. Around 11.30pm. There was a lot of shouting and arguing also which was awful.

The hotel is in need of a good clean from carpets to walls. The carpets in all areas were very dirty and in bedrooms. Lots of dirt and dust on the stairs and rooms. The restaurant was lovely, though and clean.

Taking cozy to the limit.

The staff were nice and attentive. Hotel was close to Ramside hotel where the wedding we were attending was located.

The shower in the room (107) was so small I couldn't physically put my arms up to wash myself, and I'm 5ft 10 and fairly athletic. I was wedged between the wall and shower whilst using the toilet. There were tea and coffee making facilities tucked away in the bedside table, but no room to use them unless you boil the kettle on the floor. The breakfast wasn't very nice. Bacon and sausages were anaemic, and the continental side of things was bread that you could toast and mini boxes of Kellogs. No fault of the nice lady on reception, but I was presented with a bill for the room on checkout, even though I had paid during the booking process via Booking.com.
