About this cottage rental

Situated in a peaceful valley at the confluence of two streams, this site would have been sacred to the Romans and is still a very special place today. With the ramparts of the fort guarding the farm yard to the west and the only Roman milestone left standing intact in it’s original position just behind the cottage, few properties in Britain can have so many traces of Rome around them.

The cottage at Codley Gate Farm has recently been converted to provide superbly appointed 5 star holiday accommodation. There is a fabulous well-equipped spacious dining kitchen, a cosy sitting room with an inglenook style fireplace and three double bedrooms, each with their own luxury en-suite bathroom. Lovely country walks can be enjoyed directly from the cottage. There is a sheltered graveled yard to sit out in on your return and use of the meadow in front of the cottage.

Ideally situated to explore Hadrians Wall Country together with the breath-taking Northumberland countryside and coastline

Setting: Codley Gate Cottage was once the main dwelling house on the site but was converted to a milking parlour when our ‘modern’ farmhouse replaced it in the 1800’s.

In 2008 the barn was sympathetically restored using the best of modern building methods combined with traditional materials to provide a spacious and comfortable holiday home. The valley is rich in British natural wildlife with red squirrels, deer, badgers and bats regularly seen from the cottage. Swallows, owls and curlews are part of the abundant bird life that surrounds Codley Gate.

Area attractions: The list is endless but a few highlights are Vindolanda and the Chesterholme Museum, The Forts along The Wall including Housesteads & Chesters. Kielder Water and Forest park. Country Houses within a short distance include Wallington Hall and Cragside. Coastal Castles at Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and Lindisfarne Holy Island. The Alnwick Water Gardens and Castle.

Whether you wish to visit Roman or other historical sights, enjoy the unspoilt countryside with moorland or woodland walks, visit the Northumbrian Coastline or the Lake District or simply curl up with one of our good books or magazines by the fire, there will always be plenty to do here.

The kitchen is well equipped for those who enjoy cooking that special meal, (there are good farm shops, Waitrose and other quality supermarkets to choose from). Alternatively there is a wide choice of places to dine locally.

We will do everything we can to make your holiday relaxing and enjoyable. Please let us know if there is anything further you need.

Property is well equipped and comfortable, in a stunning location at the bottom of the valley. Beautiful walks from the door. Visiting the on-site and fascinating Vindolanda roman ruins and museum is an absolute must when visiting here (this is not dog friendly). Would highly recommend this property for anybody looking for great walks from the front door, a pub reasonably close (around 30 mins walk on very quiet road) with great food and dog friendly (Twice Brewed Inn), a cosy woodburner for cold nights in, and well equipped kitchen/dining space for home cooking! If your pet requires an enclosed garden, this isn't necessarily ideal. There is no garden attached to this property. The garden is opposite and is escapable, so lead walking is required (if you have a dog like ours who likes to explore and doesn't have great recall!).all 3 bedrooms have ensuite with shower, upstairs main bedroom also has bath - downstairs bedroom is serviced by a jack and jill bathroom which also services as the down stairs toilet. We would have no hesitation in rebooking. The whole area is a walkers paradise, and this property is bang in the middle of it!

We had a lovely cosy stay in this comfortable cottage. It suited our needs perfectly. It is a remote property right next to the Vindolanda site, which was well worth visiting, there was free entry with the cottage. Great location for lots of walks and Hexham & Corbridge are worth a visit. We thoroughly enjoyed staying here.

We’ve stayed at Codley Gate many times and it never disappoints. A lovely comfortable cottage equipped with everything we need. It’s a fantastic area with great historical sites (especially Vindalanda) and wonderful scenery.

Wonderful week here. The only thing that let it down was the smell of the drains in the downstairs toilet. Also, the tiles leading into the toilet from the living room was a bit of trip hazard as they are uneven which my 84year old dad tripped on. Otherwise, the property was great, with free entrance to Vindolanda, as was the location generally.

This cottage was in a beautiful, quiet location, close to the Vindolanda Museum. It has a well-appointed kitchen, three bedrooms, each with ensuite bathroom (one down, two upstairs), and plenty of parking space. The welcome amenities were over the top! We had everything we needed for our first breakfast, and then some. Our host was very responsive to questions. A couple of suggestions, though. The VRBO listing showed a dryer, but there was only a washer in the cottage. Since we were on an extended trip, we chose locations partly on whether they had washer and dryer available, so had to make adjustments. Also the directions to the cottage were confusing. Since we knew it was close to Vindolanda, we did better when we started from the Sill to find it. Perhaps it would be better to drop a pin that the SATNAV could use? We would definitely visit this property again.

We stayed here as part of birthday celebrations for a big Roman history fan. It felt so special to stay right next to Vindolanda and to know that the Trust benefitted from our stay. The cottage is gorgeous, well stocked with some very kind welcome snacks and plenty of useful amenities. All the rooms are comfortable and the nearby pub is excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would absolutely recommend to anyone thinking about booking.
