About this house rental

Situated in a small lane just off the Round Pont d'arenes, Le Jardin Secret is literally a secret garden and house hidden in the winding small lanes of Arles. An unprepossessing wooden door opens into a house full of sunlight from the small courtyard garden at the heart of the house.

The hallway leads to a small conservatory, kitchen with domed stone ceiling and sitting room across the courtyard. Although there are two bedrooms we only let the main bedroom with ensuite bathroom/shower. (The second bedroom is available for long term stays and has a small shower en suite but a downstairs toilet),

Adjacent to the main bedroom, small bureau and a veranda overlook the garden. The kitchen is well equipped with a gas range, electric oven, microwave, two fridges and dishwasher. There are stairs into the basement which has been converted into an overflow for the kitchen with a butler sink and stone worktops for food preparation, a washing machine and a freezer space. The house has internet, television gas heating and hot water.

Across the courtyard is a cosy sitting room with sofas and TV.

The bedroom, kitchen and basement are ancient and made of stone with arched ceilings (which may flake dust due to their age). The sitting room and second bedroom are only about 300 years old and a different style - mainly constructed of wood. the hallway and upstairs bathroom form a third age of construction and probably were formed by infilling the alley way to the other two parts of the house - leaving a courtyard at the heart of the house.

Please note however that the stairs are made of stone and have become uneven with age, also both sets of stairs are steeper than modern staircases.

Perfect stay at the Secret Garden during the opening week of Les Rencontres d’Arles. Rebecca’s house is absolutely charming, full of history and details and everything you may need. Lovely kitchen and bedrooms, and we enjoyed a lot the patio in the evenings! Stairs are a bit tricky (just because they’re old) but just be careful going up and down. Location is also perfect, in the middle of everything but in a quiet street. Communication with Rebecca and Veronique was really easy, thank you so much! Looking forward to stay there again!! :)

We had a wonderful stay at the Secret Garden in Arles. The weather was very hot while we were there which was a challenge for us, as we’re from a cooler climate. But the house was beautiful and in a wonderful location right near the arena. Checking in and out was easy and we loved our holiday here.

This place is a gem up high in the old part of Arles. Quiet and private. Shops and cafes close by. The owners are wonderful, welcoming and immediately responsive to any needs. Highly recommend!

Truly great location, quiet. Beautiful internal courtyard. Stairs tricky (but it’s old so that’s to be expected. Would be great if Back area had a toilet as well as the shower but again, it’s old. Great kitchen at front and lounge area at the back. I run annual art workshops in Arles in May so the owner allowed 2 large bags of equipment to be stored downstairs so we could use it for the 2025 workshop. Much appreciated.

I stayed here for 30 days. I’m sure most people spend two or three days. I got to see what 200 year-old walls do in real time.I personally loved this house. It’s location, it’s charm, It’s excellent kitchen and most of all its quirkiness made it the perfect place for me to stay for my extended holiday. But if you are older and have troubles going upstairs, you’re not going to like the secret garden. I can only imagine the maintenance and upkeep this home needs on a regular basis. But for my purposes, it was perfect and the bull fights made this a Hemingway moment. One last thing. The property owner and manager were extremely helpful.

We loved the location, which was walking distance to just about everything in Arles. Property managers were very responsive and friendly. The property is distinctive and charming, if a little quirky (which I like). We didn't really cook, so can't say much about the kitchen facilities.

We had no idea what it would be like to live in Arles or what the Secret Garden would be like. WE LOVED IT! It is very old and quite quirky. The kitchen was delightful as I live to cook. We realized that some of our home was very old and other parts just old. We could walk a few steps and view the arena that was built in 90 AD! We found our favorite gelato and coffee places. We would recommend this lovely place and that you would stay at least two weeks…we were here a month!
