Beautiful home with a historic feel and amazing view!!

The most beautiful house and view!! I loved the old plantation style and unique layout of the house. Also loved all the cool antiques and books. The house has a lot of history. The outdoor shower was cool too! The house is stocked with pretty much everything you could need and more. Would definitely stay here again!

Great house.I just wish this "review process" was shorter.

our stay at the house was exceptional, perfect surroundings, cool, summer trade, perfect size for our family of 4, and the amenities were more than we could ask for. The house was clean and spotless. I had my doubts about the outdoor shower, but it ended up being the best thing about the house…I enjoyed it so much! I just wish we could’ve entertain more with our friends at the house. Otherwise, without a doubt, our family enjoyed our vacation at The Ishihara house…as advertised, classic quality!!!

The house was a beautiful and unique old home. Wood trim and accents, the old wood desk in the library, pictures and decorations gave the place a real homey feeling of times gone by while at the same time having a very modern and well equipped kitchen and counter space. The outdoor shower accessed through the bathroom was spectacular. We split our trip between the North Shore and Waimea. This home was perfectly located for exploring the Waimea Canyon.

We enjoyed / weeks of blissful relaxation in this heritage home. The house was perfectly cooled with the cross ventilation and trade winds. The kitchen was well equipped and there were even sharp knives! We loved the neighborhood, the Waimea canyon view and we grew use to the roosters It was a great place to stay. We hope to return.

We all adored our stay - the cottage truly felt like a home away from home. Abundant amenities and in such a peaceful, quiet neighborhood, yet very close to town - very convenient to pop down to a store or beach.

I can't wait to go back this home is the most perfect spot to relax.

First impressions were interesting as the neighborhood is a pretty mixed group of homes with some well kept and some not so much. We were greeted by a random little dog that turned out to be not so random. On the back porch we found a water bowl with a note on it requesting to keep it filled and dog treats for this little pup who must make the area his home. We werent warned of the friendly and very present dog but if one of us had a fear of or allergy to dogs, this would be a big problem. The home itself was stiflingly hot inside. No AC. The owner and manager said it will cool off in the evening and wont be a concer, but we arrived in the evening and while the breeze was blowing through the home, the whole house was just radiating heat. There is no way we could stay in the home, and unfortunately the manager and owner did not offer any sort of assistance for this concern. We ended up leaving the home about an hour after arrival because we were not going to be able to sleep in that kind of heat. The owner took our money and did not work with us even as we had to get alternative accomodations at the last minute because of the problem. I understand the owner did not state that there was AC in the home so it wasnt fraudulent, but it's pretty upsetting when you spend $1,700 on an accomodation and have to walk away from it. This experience left a bad taste in my mouth for using VRBO in the future. While I think the property manager had the best of intentions, his hands were tied.

Do I have to fill ALL of this in? Just to say we really loved the house?

We stayed here after staying with family in Poipu. This was our time alone. The first evening we invited the family, which was flying out on the RED EYE, to dinner. They all loved the setting. We grilled that night. The grill needs to be replaced immediately. The GUTS of the grill have rusted all the way through and have collapsed on themselves. We did grill but held our breath when lighting it. The house had everything we needed and then some. There were treats and Kauai Coffee waiting for us. Although it had no air conditioning, we didn't need it. The cool breeze and fans kept the home comfortable. I loved the outdoor shower! Coming from Montana, I found this fun. Need heat in the shower? Stand in the sun, haha. The only down side was the fan in the small bed room needed dusting.

This home is beautiful and well-equipped. I love the plantation style of architecture and the expert restoration. I must say I have never operated a double hung window with a few fingers!! The view, the privacy, the proximity to Waimea and that outdoor shower are my highlights. I have never had a “shower rainbow” before! Cinch, the neighborhood welcome pup was great company. The furniture is beautiful, beds are comfortable, and there is a blender, huge salad spinner a crock pot in the kitchen! Overall, this is an ideal place to stay.

Words can’t describe how incredible this property is. Even though the pictures are stunning, it still doesn’t do it justice. Management thought of every little detail and the amenities were very considerate and top notch. Short drive to anything you could need, especially dinner at Wrangler Steakhouse (yes, it’s a necessity). Highly recommend star gazing in the back yard, I got to witness my very first shooting star. The sunrise was absolutely breathtaking! I can’t say enough great things about our time at the Ishihara home, already planning our trip back.

Waimea canyon with the amazing view of sunrise
Cannot begin to describe the sight of waking of on an island in the Sun surrounded by such features of a clean house in an awesome neighborhood and friendly animals.

It is a really great home & location.
But the house next door is under construction, probably for another year. So each day there was some hammering, sawing, nail-guns, air-compressors, cement mixers and some other annoying noises.
But other then that, it was a really awesome place!
I would recommend it to anyone.

Ishihara house is a very special house. It possesses a certain soul and dignity and is wonderful to be in.
It sits high above the town of Waimea in a little neighborhood of local residents. It boasts an incredible view up the Waimea River to the mountains and to the west, the ocean is visible in the distance.
It was always breezy during our stay and we loved to sit on the porch and enjoy the view and the sounds of the local roosters.
Very restful.

This property is phenomenal. You will LOVE staying here. 1) never have I felt so welcome at a rental property (normally you get there and are bombarded with instructions and signage on all the things not to do and to beware of extra charges etc etc. Not the case here - little welcome things in the kitchen and lovely accommodations) and 2) what a special property! Property is a stunning plantation cottage that has been beautifully updated and expanded, allowing it to feel rich in history while providing every amenity. The view - WOW - and all the outdoor space and seating you could want to enjoy it. Quiet and peaceful location. The breeze from the ridge location creates the perfect indoor and outdoor temperatures. Love the luxurious outdoor shower set up. Fluffy towels and soft linens. I cannot say enough good things about this property. Normally the rental is just a place to sleep for us, but not this place - this property is truly special and was a highlight of the trip. I wish we had spent more time at this property (plus Waimea downtown and canyon are spectacular. And Polihale state beach is amazing) instead of heading to the north side. don’t get me wrong, the north side of the island is incredibly special, I just loved this property! Such a welcoming, peaceful, special home.

This is the only place I would stay in Kauai. This house took my breath away and I’m excited for when I can come back.

My husband and I stayed here for part of our honeymoon and loved our stay! The house itself has so much character, we especially appreciated the antique furniture and open floor plan! The view up the gorge is pretty incredible that makes staying at this home entirely worth it! We wish we could have taken more advantage of all this house had to offer, we even said it would be fun to come back with a larger group! The location is nice and tucked away and right at the bottom of the road to drive up to see Waimea Canyon. It’s managed by a vacation rental company so check-in was different than typical VRBOs we’ve stayed in, but the host was accommodating when we wanted to check in after hours.

The Ishihara cottage is a unique and wonderful place to stay. With gorgeous views of the canyon and the sea, and plenty of space both inside and out, it is a marvelous place to breathe deeply and truly relax. I loved being at the end of a street and on a hill in a quiet residential neighborhood (well, quiet except for a few local doggies and of course the many roosters in valley below!) The cottage has an amazing zen-like energy and we hope to return. Highly recommend this place for solo travelers, couples, or families with kids. Proximity to Waimea Canyon can’t be beat and the small boat harbor @ Kekaha (less than five minutes away) is a great place to take a NaPali Coast trip.

Very private and quiet neighborhood, except of course for the island roosters. You can’t get closer to Waimea Canyon, with spectacular views from the house. We enjoyed the furnishings and aloha vibe. Good reading and resource material too.

The Waimea house is a wonderful, peaceful stay. The house is located at the edge of Waimea's town strip - easy access to food and stores. The house is at the access road for the Waimea canyon, the drive is nice and relatively short. The west side of the island is quiet and provides plenty of downtime. There is easy access to Kekaha and the parks.
The house is very well stocked. There is everything needed in the kitchen. The windows provide a great breeze. The lanai is a great spot to sit and relax. There is a distant ocean view. The house has plenty of privacy. The wifi is strong and reliable,

Really cool house on the edge of the canyon. Great sunrise and open space along with adequate lounging areas including the back deck. Would definitely stay here again.

This home was far beyond any our expectations. Staying here we felt was literally like our other home. The house was clean, quiet, peaceful, with amazing views, and was easy come and go! The Ishihara Home is beautiful inside, the breeze from the surrounding hills and mountains keeps the place cool and nice, there is no need for any AC! The back deck is a wonderful place to stay in the evenings. Do not hesitate to book a stay here, I cannot think of anything that could have been better.

Beautiful. Great having beach equipment. The kitchen had some spices and staples which were greatly appreciated. Awesome shower! Enjoyed the back deck and stunning canyon view.

Such a wonderful visit and our hosts were incredibly responsive to our requests. There’s only 1 bathroom but for a couple it was an indulgent amount of space. We’ll be back!

The house is beautiful and in a good neighborhood; close to Waimea Canyon for great hiking. My only complaint, and it’s significant to light sleepers: there are a LOT of dogs in the neighborhood and they bark a lot in the evenings, and off and on during the night. If you’re a light sleeper like me, then it’s a big issue. If you’re not, you probably won’t notice. That said, I did enjoy my stay - the house is very spacious and well equipped and I loved sitting out on the back deck watching the ocean. Do note, you will hear the highway from a distance as you’re on a bluff. The communication with the property manager was excellent; the only snafu I had was expecting my check-in directions sooner per VRBO’s communication; in fact, they give directions only 48 hours in advance. Not a big deal, more like an issue with VRBO than with the property itself.

The house was nice, overlooking the canyon was absolutely picture perfect. We couldn’t have picked a better place.

Absolutely gorgeous house and view!

The pictures on vrbo don’t do this house justice. It’s a beautifully renovated old Hawaii house with old wood floors and trim, large kitchen, large lanai beautiful outdoor shower (trust me) and a friendly neighbor cat and dog. The views are good and it gets a nice evening breeze, and it feels like Home. Only drawbacks are that it’s not really walkable, and it doesn’t have a dishwasher or air conditioning. However we didn’t find those to be a problem and the wonderful fans and windows kept the house pleasant even on a 90 degree afternoon.

Fantastic property! Immaculate and beautifully decorated (online photos are outdated). Lovely quiet neighborhood setting. The home owner lives across the street and extended us the kindest hospitality. The setting is great- enjoyed meals on thr patio, overlooking the canyon and beach.

We really enjoyed out stay at this newly-remodeled, historical home. The views are amazing. It's quite close to Waimea Canyon (about 20 min to the overlook) and Na Pali Coast tour departures (maybe about 15 min). I recommend it if you are going to be planning activities in those areas. Carol at the office is quite nice and was very helpful in answering questions.

First of all, we booked this property for April 2020 before Covid so we appreciated the opportunity to delay our trip for a year. We originally intended to bring my son and daughter and son-in-law, but they could not make it this year. So we had the whole house to ourselves and it was heavenly! The pictures don't do it justice because it was recently updated but the website has not been. It is now a 2 bedroom home instead of a 3 bedroom because they removed a wall between 2 small bedrooms, which is a wise improvement. The king bed and bedding was very comfortable.
They also made the one small bathroom larger by bumping out the tub wall and adding an indoor/outdoor shower. We thought this was really cool! They just need to fix the sliding glass doors because neither locked correctly.
The place has such a historical vibe, I felt like there were "good spirits" around us! The kitchen, dining and living areas are large and airy and the furniture was very classy and comfortable. I loved reading on the day bed in the corner of the great room. The addition of an overhead pergola and outdoor furniture on the back porch was an added bonus to an already phenomenal view! There is no AC but plenty of ceiling fans everywhere and windows all over to catch the breeze.
We booked this place because it was just at the base of Waimea Canyon and close to the harbors for the Napali Coast tours. The beach at Salt Pond was awesome and not crowded at all! We stayed 3 nights before moving on to a condo in Poipu, which in comparison is not as impressive (even with an ocean view) - now we wish we had just stayed at the Ishihara Home longer!
Also Carol, one of the property managers, was super accommodating for our late check-in, and took care of a cable tv problem, even though we actually didn't report it as an issue because we used our laptops to stream stuff. We also met Patrick on a way out and he was sincerely interested in our feedback since we were the first guests since the remodel.
We would recommend this place for no more than 2 couples and 1 kid, since the single bed is actually the day bed in the open living room. One couple and a couple kids would be fine too. We didn't set our expectations that high and we were pleasantly surprised that this house turned out to be our favorite accommodation among 3 in different parts of the island!
If you like historical homes that are classically rustic, and canyon views, you will love this house!

Wish I could leave a glowing review but we never got to check in. The property manager’s assistant called a week before our arrival date to tell us renovations were ongoing and the house wouldn’t be available. They offered us a hotel room as our only alternative, and the barest hint of an apology. It also took multiple messages to get a response from the owner to cancel our booking and process a refund, although once action was taken, my card did show a full credit. Hopefully this is a one-off circumstance because the house looks lovely and we were disappointed that we couldn’t stay.
