The Point at Maria Bluff
The name paints a beautiful picture, and The Point at Maria Bluff lives up to its name. This architecturally stunning home occupies a remarkable piece of land high above the edge of the sea.
This incredible compound is comprised of a grand four bedroom main home, with an adjacent and independent 2 bedroom guest cottage VRBO# 963089 with separate entrance and amenities. The Point is located on the St John peninsula known as Maria Bluff, sitting at the very edge of the promontory. While it is convenient to Cruz Bay and the North Shore beaches, it is also a private paradise that you will never want to leave.
You arrive through an elegant outdoor gate and wind your way through a thoughtfully designed Zen Garden, complete with Asian accents and reflection bench. As you enter the main house, you pass through the lobby of the 50 foot high observation tower which has been lovingly decorated by the owner to give you a feeling of the sea, replete a spiral staircase, reminiscent of sea kelp, leading to the observation deck. This deck has 300 degree views of the ocean and island which are truly awesome, a perfect place to enjoy some quiet time and simply take in the natural beauty.
The Point was designed by artfully blending exterior and interior spaces offering multiple gathering, lounging and dining spots. Numerous decks surround the house and its sparkling pool, which features a disappearing edge to truly give you the sensation of being on the sea. A hot tub shares the pool deck, for breezy island evenings spent watching the twinkling lights of the stars and distant islands. Steps below, an incredible octagonal observation deck literally hangs over the cliff to the ocean, where you can observe fish in the tidal pools below, watch the sun slip below the horizon or simply close your eyes and listen to the pounding surf.
Back on terra firma, the Point offers 4 air-conditioned master suites, all with custom designed 4 poster king beds and ocean views. Each of these thoughtfully designed retreats has ensuite bath with double vanity and an open native stone shower to take in the views. In addition, all of the bedroom suites are built with exterior access for maximum privacy.
The interior living space features an efficient and well-designed kitchen with mahogany cabinetry that opens onto a breakfast bar, living room and more ocean views. An adjacent breakfast nook with television serves as a spot to enjoy a hot morning beverage, and perhaps catch up on the news or your emails. An additional half bath is conveniently located here as well.
Throughout, The Point is designed and decorated in a contemporary eclectic style, combining warm natural wood pieces, modern furnishings accented in soothing natural and sea tones and unique original artwork. All combine to offer beautiful yet inviting spaces.

As some of the very first guests to stay in this newly built house, we stumbled upon a rare gem in Caribbean rentals. We enthusiastically recommend this beautiful property and hope to go back some day. First and foremost, the location is unbeatable. Close enough to grocery stores and Cruz Bay that running an errand or going out to dinner is an easy drive. The house is thoughtfully designed and sits on a nice piece of property with an incredible view. The interior finishes are also beautifully done with many nice touches we were still noticing days into our trip. The house even has a tiny yard, which our children enjoyed. Everything in the house is brand new (from the linens, to the appliances to the beach chairs). What a rare treat in a rental home. And, even though new, the owners clearly put a great deal of thought into what a home needs and it wasn't lacking for anything. The kitchen is lovely to work in and very well equipped.
The space itself is very well laid out. I was most concerned about outdoor space, and there is a gorgeous pool, sun deck and shaded lounge area (complete with couches and a table for dining).
One note for anyone with children. From the description its hard to tell, but the four bedrooms (each equally beautiful) are not reached from the main interior living space. For each you go outside. We did discover mid-way through our trip two tiny fold-out cots in an entry hall that could easily be fashioned as a small bedroom for children.
I was a bit nervous at first about the layout not wanting our 4 young children (ages 2-8) or 90 year old father-in-law wandering near the pool at night. This was easily solved (we ended up putting our kids above us, and using deck chairs to wall off the steps to the pool, so they could only get into the downstairs bedroom if they came looking for us).
My father-in-law found the stairs into the house manageable and then it was all one level inside, as he took the room off the shaded porch. Each room has its own bath, so wandering around at night wasn't necessary.
This house worked out perfectly for us. That said, you should ask the rental agency if you have any concerns about the accessibility or suitability for children.
We loved this house and really do hope to go back some day. Its a truly gorgeous spot!
