Marco Island: Nestled in the mangrove islands of southwest Florida's coast, Marco Island is indeed a world-class resort destination surrounded by miles and miles of pristine, uninhabited islands, bays, creeks, and the Gulf of Mexico. To the north is the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and its Briggs Memorial Nature Center. To the south lies the sprawling 10,000 Islands with over 70 coastal miles of fly fishing heaven, inhabited only by the tiny fishing villages of Goodland, Everglades City, Chokoloskee and eventually Flamingo. Included in this southerly stretch is Collier-Seminole State Park, the 10,000 Islands National Wildlife Refuge, Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve, Big Cypress National Preserve and the 5000 square mile Everglades National Park, ensuring continued protection against coastal development.

Marco Island: Gulf water temperatures range from the low 60's in the winter to the high 80's in the summer and fall, providing good fly fishing during the winter and outstanding fly fishing during the spring summer and fall. The principal species available to the backwater fly fisher are snook, redfish, tarpon, jack crevalle, seatrout, ladyfish, spanish mackerel, pompano and mangrove snapper. If you don't mind going a bit offshore and using different fishing techniques, there are also opportunities for cobia, tripletail, king mackerel, barracuda, grouper, snapper, amberjack, drum, shark, permit and many other species. Fortunately, most anglers do go offshore and so the backwaters are usually free from crowding, even during the busy winter season.

Marco Island Fishing: 'Baby tarpon, weighing from 2 to 20 pounds, can be found around the island throughout the year. Pound for pound, they are just as feisty as their larger cousins. Fishing is usually best in the summer. They are most often found in the major canals, deepwater bays and the remote inland creeks in the mangrove forest. I recommend the safe release of all tarpon; they have little food value and an artificial replica can be provided by most local taxidermists.'

Fishing in the late summer and fall is best in early morning and at dusk, when water surface temperatures are at their lowest. September and October can produce some outstanding fly fishing for redfish. This is the time when the larger ones will come out of the Gulf of Mexico and invade the inshore passes and estuaries. A 10-20 pound redfish will put some serious stress on your fly tackle.

If you are looking for a memorable VRBO experience....STOP. Don't look further. Just book this place. Now. You won't regret it. We visited this unit in mid March 2021. We were looking for a place that had mostly mid morning through late afternoon sun so we could enjoy the pool all day long. This unit is perfect for that. The screened in pool is clean and warm with plenty of room for lounge chairs. The pool and surrounding area is also well maintained (we've had some pools with peeling, cracks, etc. This one had none of that). There were excellent instructions to operate the pool as well. The "spa" is also well maintained but the water is the same temp as the pool (it's not a hot tub). There are jets for bubbles. The view from the pool is jaw dropping. It overlooks the inland waterways of Marco. The unit is located in an affluent area so the boats/yachts are moored along the waterway or cruise by. You can also watch the sunset over the water - just heavenly. Also available for your use (and we used it alot) is a pier/dock in the waterway. In the morning, we would take our coffee down there and enjoy the warm sun, the occasional boat cruising by, fish jumping, and even a manatee sighting. It is very spacious - offering enough room for all. Note - I would caution swimming from the pier - only because we witnessed quite a few jellyfish in the water. Also from the pier is excellent fishing. The unit come with rods - just buy your own bait (Publix sells frozen squid as bait). There is a small tackle box with a few jigs. If fishing is your thing, I would recommend packing a few of your favorite baits. The unit itself is situated in a very quiet and safe area. It is well maintained. The air conditioning works well and it easily accessible. Light switches are marked for your convenience. The beds are super comfortable. The master shower has a dual shower head (nice!). There are a gazillion fluffy towels available and also an oversized washer and dryer. The kitchen has everything you need. The refrigerator is oversized and also has an ice maker. There is also outdoor lighting for added ambiance/security (including on the dock). Late afternoon (at least for us) was the best viewing of porpoise's swimming by. What a sight! We would sit with an ice cold beverage on the dock, enjoy the sunsetting, and wait for the breaching porpoise's. The owners are EXCELLENT - calling to ensure all is perfect with your stay.
