About this villa rental
Casa del Sol, an Akumal Landmark and one of our favorite houses!
Casa del Sol is well known for its great location, right at the headwaters of Yal-Ku Lagoon, very private, and for its funky eclectic decor. Previously owned by the band The Grateful Dead, this house is perfect for large groups or families, and has hosted some big name celebrities in its time.
The outdoor kitchen and living area on the lagoon side of the property are great for entertaining and family get-togethers. Access to the lagoon is very easy, just down the garden path and across your own private bridge into the cool clear water of Yal-Ku where you can snorkel with the fish all day long. There is also a fabulous roof patio, where you can sit surrounded by the lagoon and the jungle.
Casa del Sol is well known for the many unique murals painted throughout the house that highlight the area's Maya History and Natural Beauty. This house is truly one of a kind and lends itself very well to people just "hanging out" together and having a great time! Merily, Obideo and Leo the caretakers, do an excellent job. They are very charming and will take excellent care of you. Obideo is also available to prepare meals for an additional fee, which we highly recommend you try.
Casa del Sol offers many amenities including a swimming pool and a lagoon side palapa with plenty of hammocks and lounge chairs for snoozing away the afternoon. It also has a waterfall with its own tiny dipping pool on the lagoon side of the property. The refreshing waterfall is a wonderful place to give yourself a water massage after a swim in the lagoon, and it's also great for kids to play in the dipping pool when the waterfall is switched off. There's an outdoor shower for rinsing off after snorkeling.
Casa del Sol offers 5 bedrooms and can sleep up to 13 people. There are 2 bedrooms on the second level. One room has 2 queen beds, the other has 1 king bed and 1 sofa bed which can be set up upon request. Each bedroom has a private bathroom and air conditioning. The Master is on the third level with a king bed, desk, private bathroom, air conditioning, and a private palapa covered patio. For additional sleeping, there is a casita downstairs with a king bed, private bathroom, and air conditioning. There is also a tower bedroom with a queen bed, air conditioning, and great views! There is also a roof top with an outdoor shower and toilet. There is a smart TV in the main living area, master bedroom, and both 2nd level bedrooms. AC in the living room and in the bedrooms.
Comes with 4 bicycles for guest use.

From getting there to getting home, Akumal Direct was involved in every step. We have been to Akumal every summer for the last few years and this was the 1st time with Akumal Direct and their service is unmatched. The house is beyond words and the location is amazing but Akumal Direct made the entire experience top notch!

House was spacious and comfortable, and we enjoyed the storied past of the home. We spent a lot of time on the downstairs patio where is was the coolest with a nice breeze which made the humidity bearable but were able to retreat into cool bedroom air conditioning when it was too much. The small pool is lovely for a dip or staying wet in the heat and we got to know a number of iguanas residing around the area.Being able to walk down and hop into the cool lagoon and snorkel with the fish really was wonderful, and we did it everyday. The highlight of the vacation for a few of us. Going in early and late easily avoided the crowds and we got to know all the places where the fish were.A shout out to Merily, Obidio, and Leo who kept the house and grounds immaculate and tidy yet were so unobtrusive. Merily also did our laundry at our request for a small fee.The property Manager, Scott checked in very frequently and was very helpful with recommendations and suggestions. Communication was wonderful with the Akumal Direct team. Alex was able to coordinate us for 2 bookings for us, The Monkey Sanctuary and Snorkeling with turtles Bothe we enjoyed a lot.We highly recommend eating at the Buena Vida for lunch and dinner, we loved it there. The Jungle cafe was our breakfast spot. Rent a golf cart, you won't need you car in the local area but will easily be able to get around. Avoid the aggressive parking and snorkeling vendors on the road into town.Quiet and peaceful overall and we felt very safe in Akumal.

This is a very unique house and the location on Yal Ku Lagoon is perfect during the hot part of the summer. It is also nice to get away from seasonal sargassum outbreaks.Our part of 11 was comfortable in this well-equipped house. The staff kept the place very clean and . Having an outdoor kitchen to serve the downstairs public areas is perfect. We spent time in the pool, lagoon, and under the palapa, when not visiting the beach at Half Moon Bay or Akumal Bay. We enjoyed morning walks to Turtle Bay for coffee and/or breakfast. La Lunita is a short walk for a nice dinner. Overall, a wonderful place to enjoy with our friends and family.
