Booked here as it was central to what we had planned and were meeting up with other couples. Wished we had done our homework as unfortunately Ashington town is very run down and there are better places to stay in surrounding areas. Hotel was a little dated and very dark in the bar area. Our room which was located in “the lodge” at the back of the hotel was ok it was very clean and the bed was comfy. The bathroom was small, you could clean your teeth while sat on the loo! Toilet paper was via a dispenser with small sheets of toilet roll so take your own with you. The room was quite hot made worse by the fact that you probably wouldn’t leave your window open if you were on the ground floor (which we were) as it opened up on to the car park. Found empty vape packet in bedside drawer which was a bit disappointing as you did wonder had the room been cleaned thoroughly but on the whole the room was clean. Food at the Portland was good and a very wide selection of drinks at the bar. All staff at the hotel were lovely and very accommodating and if there was a problem they did their best to resolve it. Bug bear was having to pay £10 a night for parking at the hotel. Some had it included in their room rate but we hadn’t so that was a bit of a surprise. Breakfast also wasn’t included in our stay but you could pay as you go if you wanted. On the whole it was typical for a three star hotel, the area let it down and I would probably choose to stay elsewhere but if you were looking to stay in Ashington specifically then I would recommend.
