About this cottage rental

Set in what guests describe as a 'Nature Lover's Paradise', part of Domaine de Pessel, this is an unusual little house with a fairytale look to it. Petit Pessel has even been described as a film set-like environment - guests have relished its secluded, beautiful setting and style, saying in their comments:
"The smaller cottage with its little tower and the castle-like windows……you just feel like you are in some part of the 'Lord of Rings' books in the Shire… expect a Hobbit to show up on your doorstep any moment."

Petit Pessel is a delightful one bedroomed cottage which has been modernised to a high standard, offering comfortable accommodation in a beautiful setting, surrounded by gardens and woodland with lovely views of the forest of Bessede and the hills of the region. It has the look of a 'Hansel & Gretel' house, and appeals to those seeking a natural retreat, still offering all conveniences.

There is a fitted kitchen with hob, small oven/microwave, fridge freezer, kettle, toaster and a full comprehensive range of utensils and equipment, including a basic larder of staples such as olive oil, vinegars, sea salt, pepper, herbs, and flour. We also offer a welcome pack containing bread, wine, eggs, butter, milk, orange juice, biscuits, fruit in season and other local treats.

Petit Pessel has an attractively furnished living room with leather sofas.

The first floor bedroom has a double bed and a full size single, with an adjoining modern shower room with glass shower enclosure, WC and basin.

Outside, there is a paved terrace furnished with table, chairs and parasol, and a lawned area for sunloungers, with lovely views of the surrounding trees and hills.

There is a utility room in the nearby barn, equipped with washing machine, tumble dryer, drying racks, iron and ironing board, and we provide washing powder/liquid, and fabric conditioner.

Our larger cottage, Grand Pessel, also listed here, which sleeps 5 people, shares the utility room, though both cottages are detached and retain their privacy.

Urval is our closest village, a five minute drive and a 20/25 minute walk, and has a bar/restaurant, 12th century church, lovely architecture, and a rare Four Banal or bread oven.

Siorac en Perigord, a village situated on the Dordogne river, is a 10 -15 minute drive away, and has all necessary amenities - Carrefour supermarket, ATM, pharmacy, bakery, hairdresser, Tabac, Post Office, doctor, Tourist office, several restaurants including pizza takeaway/delivery, and a weekly market.

Here you can also rent canoes and swim in the Dordogne, or visit the local château with its exhibition of culinary history.

The area offers easy access to many outdoor activities and pursuits, including golf, horse-riding, cycling, walking, and flying lessons or gliding - plus the wealth of cultural events, festivals and markets which take place locally during the summer months.

Additionally, this region is known as the cradle of prehistory, with a rich heritage of both prehistoric and historical sites to visit. Combined with the beauty of the architecture, the proximity of vineyards, the delicious local produce and frequent markets , the fertile valleys filled with tobacco, maize and sunflowers, and the delightful ambience of this prized area, this makes for a superb place to spend some refreshing, revitalizing time in a perfect setting with exceptional scenery and quality facilities for your holiday.

We are close to some of the most beautiful villages and towns in France - from medieval Sarlat (30 km) to La Roque Gageac, Domme, Castelnaud, Beynac, Molieres, and many other little gems we will share with you whilst you are with us.

The owners, Alan and Christine, were very welcoming on arrival setting the tone for our stay. The property was spotlessly clean, and thoughtful details included such as wine, milk, butter, bread and orange juice, tea and coffee, and olive oil, garlic and herbs for cooking. Pessel is very peaceful and is surrounded by beautiful woodland, so perfect for relaxing and enjoying nature. We didn’t need to venture far from the gite to see pine martins, deer, hoopoe, black kites, fire crests, short toed eagles and too many species of butterfly to list. Alan and Christine were very helpful and charming and I wouldn’t hestitate to recommend Pessel to any nature lovers wanting to get away from it all.

The property is in a fairly remote location relative to the nearest village of Urval, but if you’re looking for peace and quiet you definitely get that. There are other buildings around, the owners house and one other rental property but they are distant enough not to intrude on your privacy. The property was clean and tidy and well presented upon our arrival and was reasonably well equipped. However some of the items listed by home away, such as wi-if, tv, dvd, radio are actually only available upon direct request to the owners. This was not a major issue to us as we decided to do without them, with the exception of the wi-fi, but we think it should be more clearly explained on the home away website. One other point to mention is that the oven is actually only a worktop oven about the size of a small microwave. The owners were very friendly and helpful and very understanding when we got delayed on the day of our arrival. Our fault for travelling on the first Saturday of August. They were quite knowledgable about the local area and suggested several places to visit and also the best times to visit. We enjoy walking and there were numerous waymarked walks in the area for which maps and guides were available from the local tourist information offices. Overall we had a very pleasant and relaxing stay.

Beautiful and tranquil location. Cottage was idyllic and very well equpped. The owners had thought of everything to make it a pleasant stay. The patio area was lovely as were the surroundings. Cottage was exceptionally clean and very comfortable. There is so such to do in the region and Urval is a great base for exploring the Dordogne.
