About this cottage rental
Perfect for couples seeking something “special “this snug little cottage is the perfect rural retreat.Beautifully positioned ,right beside the famous Nantes / Brest canal, the property sits in the middle of a small terrace of cottages dating back to Napoleonic times when the canal was built. Today the cottage has been updated to modern standards but still retains immense appeal, full of character and charm with its old beamed ceiling and open fireplace. With lovely views over the canal and beyond the patio doors open onto a terrace with table and chairs. Steps take you down to a small garden laid mainly to lawn where you can follow the sun around from dawn to dusk. A gate then directly opens onto the tow path and canal from where you can walk in minutes to the village, over the canal, past the grand manor and into the heart of the village. A real advantage is that the loverly village of Gouarec can cater for most of your requirements all within easy walking distance , without going further afield. Exploring near- by you can take a walk or bike ride [which can be hired locally] along the canal to enjoy the countryside and other villages along the way. Apart from exploring the beautiful waterway, the canal offers canoeing and fishing right on your doorstep. The pretty little village of Gouarec is just a very short stride away across the bridge or lock. It sits where the River Blavet runs through it to converge with the canal close to the cottage. The canal is no longer a working waterway but occasionally small boats and canoeists glide pass . It's popular for fishing and with occasional horse riders, cyclists and walkers using the tow-path, its a great spot for just watching and relaxing over aperitifs .Built of old Bretton stone the village offers traditional bars, a pizzeria, creparie, patisserie and antique shop. Recently built is a municipal indoor swimming pool, again within walking distance. This pretty little village offers everything you need without ever needing to travel and retains a pace of life that is there to be enjoyed. But for anyone wanting to seriously explore Briittany the cottage is the perfect location. Right in the centre of Brittany, midway between Rostrennen and Mur-de- Brettagne just off the N164 the cottage is ideally situated. Apart from the canal and amazing countryside , just 10 mins away by car is the beautiful lac De Guerleden ,Brittany’s largest lake , its the perfect spot for swimming and water sports but the area also offers extensive trails for walking and cycling. . .South of the lake is the forest of Quénécan, an area known as ‘Swiss Brittany’, which covers about 11 square miles. The Quénécan forest and Abbaye de Bon Repos are not to be missed.Wherever you go , near or far almost anywhere is within 2 hours drive time, for instance to Renne in the West, Brest in the east, Roscoff in the North and Quimper in the South and everywhere in between! Located in the beautiful Cotes d'amour the cottage is also virtually on the border with the Department of Morbihan with its vast gulf, beaches and sea foods, within an easy day trip to the south of Gouarec. You won't be short of things to do and places to go. Beaches north and south, beautiful countryside to explore and wonderful walks or cycle rides .. Whether you like to relax and forget the car ,'take it easy' or prefer a more action packed holiday, this little cottage offers it all , where you can really experience' true' Brittany.

Very cosy cottage which worked well. The canal and village provide a beautiful setting.

Charming small cottage. Great location for biking. TV didn’t seem to work - for non tech people like us instructions in a folder would be nice! Good stock of dvd’s.

We were looking for a place to stay as a base for cycling, walking and kayaking. We certainly found it in this lovely well equipped cottage.
The cottage is compact but has a good kitchen and comfortable lounging area. The shower and bathroom was suitable for us.
The little terrace area was lovely for evenings sipping wine or having breakfast on.
The small garden led straight on to the Nantes to Brest canal path which forms part of the Velo 6 route. We were also able to launch the kayak from the small pontoons near us.
The cycle routes took you through lovely countryside and the roads were fairly quiet when we did go on them.
The village has a good shop, and various restaurants. There was a lovely little market on the Friday. Everyone was very friendly.
The owners communicated with us prior to our stay and left helpful instructions on how to use wifi,tv etc.
We would definitely go again.

Great position. Very cosy but had everything we needed. Instructions needed for visitors please in property. Restaurants nearby were disappointing.

The property photos do not relate to the actual fact - this is a very small property - it is a very old building - and in no way could be classed as modern or even close to being up to date-the situation of the property alongside the Canal is fantastic - touristy places nearby are great - the N164 is an absolute dream of a road - it is however cheap.

The house is small but contains everything you might need. The location is spot on, with the Canal at the bottom of the garden and the the village over the bridge. There are several good bars and restaurants in the village with friendly staff and locals. The surrounding countryside is lovely. We did several canal side walks to Pleulaff ( 6km round trip ) and also to Abbaye Bon Repos (10km ). Pleulaff has a nice cafe for refreshments before returning. The Cafe Abbaye is a great bar and also an excellent restaurant. Can recommend the house and area.

We enjoyed 12 days in this very small town. It is very quiet although people walking and cycling past on the canal towpath are a welcome feature. The campsite almost opposite (across the canal) hires out bikes and boats and handles enquiries in English.
It is a very small gite, essentially 1 up and 1 down but this was more than adequate space.
Some information was not quite up to date and despite the listing there is NO wifi - the owner had made that clear beforehand. However there is passable mobile signal so data can be used.
The owners were most helpful and live there for much of the year.

We had a great stay - only four days, but we managed to do lots of cycling which was our main reason for going. We loved the canal and the voire vert.

Chris and Diane’s cottage is perfectly located for walking, cycling or driving a beautiful region of Brittany. We chose it for its proximity to the canal de Nantes-Brest cycling path and the Velo 6. The village has all you need. The cottage is charming, well-equipped and very comfortable. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare any meal you desire. For a quiet stay in a convenient location it was perfect.

Peaceful idyllic setting
Peaceful idyllic setting
Fabulous two weeks in this delightful cottage. Although small, very comfortable and immaculate with quirky rustic design and charm. The small kitchen area however, did present a challenge preparing meals due to the very limited worktop space, but certainly didn't spoil or stay. We made good use of the terrace and small garden areas thanks to the fabulous weather during our visit and ate often on the terrace. Very relaxing in such a peaceful setting by the side of the canal and handy local shopping and dinning within just a few minutes walk, which, we made good use of. Had some very enjoyable walks along the canal towpath. Would highly recommend for anyone wanting a quiet peaceful getaway. Would definitely consider returning.

A lovely little cottage situated beside the Nantes-Brest Canal and on the very edge of Gouraec
The cottage is situated on the edge of the village of Gouraec which has a small supermarket, a boulangerie and three restaurants all within a less than five minutes walk. The creperie is well worth a visit. It's great for walking and cycling, the country lanes have very little traffic. This was our second visit and we would go again. This is a great place to go to if you want to get away from it all.

We really like the Cottage. It was well equipped and very comfortable. A nice place to wind down after a long day of sightseeing. The only downside is that none of the restaurants or cafes in town were open while we were there. We were sad not to get the local flavor, but still very much enjoyed our stay!

Great for cyclists
Had a great week in this cottage by the canal at Gouarec. Its perfect for two people, has everything you could want. If you like cycling then there is plenty to explore. Bike hire very from Breton Bikes on the other side of the canal is easy (thanks, Geoff). Easy access across Brittany to a number of towns.

Exactly as described. Met all our expectations.
Peaceful. Very friendly Breton village with excellent bakery choice of restaurants small grocery. Also lovely neighbours.
Cottage very well appointed. One suggestion. All those kitchen knives need a sharpener and maybe a pan big enough to cook a crab!
We had a relaxing time and really enjoyed watching all the activity around the lock whilst drinking our coffee or aperitif.
The cottage is in an ideal position for exploring Brittany and we couldn't believe how little traffic there was even by French standards.
We would certainly consider staying here again and would recommend a holiday here for those who want to experience the gentle side of French life.

We were very disappointed not having any tv/dvd during our stay. We followed the instructions to the letter for tv usage but it did not work. We contacted owners , who were in the south of France, but they said they could do nothing about it except apologise. We later learned they did have a caretaker in the vicinity but didn't wish to send him to the cottage as it would have incurred a charge for them. We felt let down and would never make a holiday
booking again unless we had confirmation in advance that either the owner or an agent/representative was nearby in case of need.

We loved the traditional French ambiance. Though the cottage is small it is ideal for a couple, being very well equiped. We stayed during the "heatwave" and enjoyed evening walks along the canal towpath and into the village of Gouarec.

Charming Home and Great Location
Charming Home and Great Location
We loved our week on the canal. The house is a fully restored cottage situated on both the canal and a bridle/bike path. The house is petite, but fine for two persons and has all the essentials. The bed and lounge furniture are all very comfortable. The cottage has a sense of older character and charm. We loved the "parade" on the path: dog walkers, bicycles, kids swimming in the canal, horses, a one-eyed cat, and even a real marching band. The village of Gouarec is charming as well and it's just a five-minute walk for fresh bread in the morning. There is a pub in the heart of the village with outside tables offering more good people watching! A 5 km walk along the canal path brings you to an both an abbey and a canal-side cafe. We visited nearby markets during our week which is always fun. We have already requested to rent again next year, but this time for a month.
The owners were very good with communications prior to our visit and after.

A well equipped cottage for two within walking distance of all village amenities. Several places to eat, all with friendly service. Easy access for pleasant walks along the towpath and a convenient location for sightseeing further afield. We enjoyed our week's stay.

A very relaxing holiday in a perfect location
We stayed for 5 nights in May and had a great time. The location is perfect, right beside the canal and a few steps from the lovely village of Gouarec with shops, restaurants etc. We would recommend in particular the creperie/pizzeria a short distance from the cottage. There is a real sense of being off the beaten track but everything you need is within easy reach. There are lovely canal walks /cycling in both directions and everyone was very friendly. We loved the cottage itself. It was exactly as it appears in the photos. It is perfect for 2 people, spotlessly clean with all mod cons and everything you could possibly need. It was an extremely relaxing break. We had such a good time we are planning a return visit.

small but well presented and the location was excellent
The cottage was as advertised, it did take us a while to adapt to living in such a small environment but we did and everything we needed for our stay was available. We loved the location , right alongside the canal and had some beautiful walks when we saw wildlife ++ including herons. Everyone in the village was welcoming and we were able to buy all the essentials of life withing a five minute walk. The best restaurant in the village is the creperie but in addition to this there are several really good places to eat locally. There is lots to see and do in the area and we did not manage to go everywhere we had planned. Anywhere around the local lake and at Bon Repose is really worth a visit. We intend to return !!

Comfortable and charming accommodation
Comfortable and charming accommodation
We enjoyed our stay in the canal side cottage very much. It is very small but well equipped and cosy. One soon learns to duck the beams and ceiling when upstairs! The balcony provides a good spot to sit (with a glass of wine) and watch the world leisurely pass by. Walks by the canal each day were a must and we were lucky to see an otter, herons, a fox and beautiful kingfishers. We recommend the walk to the abbey at Bon Repos and also the walks round the nearby lake (where deer can be spotted). The locals are friendly and the village bar is a good watering hole. Our only negative comment is that we had to use a dark towel to cover the bedroom window at night. As commented on by some previous reviewers, the bedroom would benefit greatly if a blackout blind was fitted to the Velux window.

Cosy Cottage for Two in a Lovely Location
Cosy Cottage for Two in a Lovely Location
We had a lovely week in the cottage. Sitting room was cosy and comfortable with nice seating and a small dining table with chairs, kitchen area is very compact but worked fine for us. French doors open onto a terrace with ample seating and a small garden with loungers - this side of the cottage overlooks the canal and there is always something to watch with walkers and cyclists passing by on the tow-path.
Bedroom is bright and airy with a nice shower room off. Bed was very comfy and we slept well. The cottage has everything you need for an enjoyable stay in central Brittany.
The cottage was spotlessly clean and we would happily use it as a base again in the future.
We had great weather for our 8 day stay and spent some time at the beach at Beau Rivage swimming in the lake - stunning and only 6 miles from the cottage. We also did a lot of trips around the area, such as Josselin, Pontivy, Huellgoat etc.
The village of Gouarec is on the doorstep - the boulangerie is a mere 200 metres stroll in the morning - and is very nice too! - and there's a small, but useful, village store as well.
