I had a very memorable experience at this hotel. I was not sure about this part of the trip but when I came, I realised it was totally worth it. Here are some of the things I enjoyed (some may be just personal preferences) - People: very friendly and helpful staff, some speak very good english. The enthusiastic boss is a master of using Google translate to deliver hospitality to guests. The welcoming treat of local snacks and tea was a nice touch. Upon my departure, my bus was late. A member of staff accompanied me at the front door -- it was really assuring and kind. The staff seem genuinely happy working there. Kudos to the boss. Long may this continue. - Facilities: the architecture itself is a time capsule -- it is not a modern hotel by any means, but if you can see beyond the few glitches it can be quite a fun experience. My room was a roomy traditional Japanese guest room, with a balcony facing the lake and Mt. Fuji. Loved it. The rotary dial phone was my personal favourite in the room. The rooftop, the outdoor onsen and the breakfast hall are the other places one can get a breath-taking view of Shoji lake and Mt. Fuji. - Location: Shoji lake area is very rural but beautiful and well organised, not crowded with tourists, perfect for someone who fancy a moment of peace and tranquillity. It is perfectly in line with the meaning of shoji (精進). I wish it stays like this. The hotel is accessible by local buses. Some small cafes, shops and a convenient store are within walking distance. - Meals: the hotel offers simple dinner for the evening. It was very much appreciated in a rural area.
Have to say, this is not something I dislike but I wish the hotel could improve in the long term: - Dinner time was a bit under staffed in that particular evening. I hope it was one off. The kind young member of the staff worked very hard. - Some facilities may need a bit of refurbishment in the not too distant future. As I said to the owner, "旧いじゃありません、懐かしいです。" (Pardon my broken Japanese.) Keep up the good work and I would love to visit again in the future.

Amazing location and views of the lake. Perfect Japanese accomodation.
Basic accomodation, but the locationon the lake and the views of Fuji are the best possible

The location is absolutely stunning. If the weather is on your side, you’ll wake up to spectacular views of the lake and Mount Fuji. The hotel offers a truly authentic Japanese experience: tatami floors, traditional futon bedding, paper sliding doors, low tables and chairs, and even separate slippers for indoors and the bathroom. Shoes are left at the entrance, which adds to the traditional atmosphere. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, even by Japan’s already high standards. There is also a traditional spa and sauna, a beautiful terrace overlooking the lake, and a simple but satisfying breakfast with toast, eggs, coffee, tea, and jam.
This is a traditional Japanese hotel, and that’s exactly why we chose it, we wanted to experience authentic Japanese culture. Sleeping on futons on tatami floors and using low tables and chairs was part of the experience for us, and we really enjoyed it. I only mention it so future guests know what to expect, as sleeping on the floor may not be comfortable for everyone, especially those with back or mobility issues. If you’re looking for an authentic Japanese stay, this place delivers exactly that.

The hospitality at this hotel was better than anything I’ve experienced. Every room has great views of Fuji and the lake. It was a traditional Japanese style, which we loved.
Slight moldy smell in some areas because the building was a little old.
