10/10 – An unforgettable stay in a place of history and beauty
Convento San Payo was one of the absolute highlights of our trip. The owners were exceptionally warm, welcoming and genuinely kind, making us feel at home from the moment we arrived. Their hospitality was outstanding and created such a memorable experience.
What makes this place truly unique is its rich history. The owner, the daughter of the renowned Portuguese sculptor José Rodrigues, lovingly keeps his memory alive by sharing his artwork and the fascinating history of the former Franciscan monastery. It adds a wonderful cultural dimension to the stay and makes you appreciate this remarkable building even more.
The convent has been beautifully preserved, offering a rare sense of serenity and timelessness. The location is spectacular, with sweeping views over the Minho River. The swimming pool is absolutely stunning, overlooking the river and surrounding countryside—an idyllic place to relax.
Breakfast each morning was delicious, with an excellent selection of fresh, local produce included in the stay.
If you’re looking for somewhere peaceful, beautiful and full of character, with exceptional hosts who are passionate about preserving the history of this special place, Convento San Payo is simply outstanding. We left feeling refreshed, inspired and very grateful for such a memorable experience. We hope to return one day.
The beds were a little hard

Luis, the manager is a hard working, professional person who seems to keep the place running. The rooms are clean and spacious and the view from anywhere on the property is beautiful.
It is sad to see the building, gardens and museum that are falling apart, the whole property seems to be uncared for by the owners, despite Luis doing his best to keep all the guests happy. It seemed this place was stuck somewhere between a self catering accommodation and a hotel, and has no real sense of identity.
