Levanto, a town of pre-Roman origins, lies at the far north of the charming villages of the Cinque Terre. The name Levanto derives from the medieval Latin levantem, east, meaning "a place that is east of Genoa".
The town of Levanto has an interesting historic center, many beautiful painted villas, a lively Wednesday market, good restaurants and shops. In the main square, Piazza della Loggia, there is a delightful 13th-century loggia.
Levanto boasts a particularly mild climate. The long sandy beach is ideal for all seaside activities. It is an excellent base for surfers, who come from all over Europe. Also on the beach, there is a swimming pool and a scuba diving center. In the summer there are many concerts and live music events. The “Laura Film Festival” takes place every year, and there are numerous tasting marathons. The area also boasts an excellent culinary tradition, thanks to the Cinque Terre wines and local fish recipes.
Levanto is a great starting point for visiting the villages of the Cinque Terre, whether by train, by sea or by taking excursions.
Genoa, Pisa, Lucca and Florence can easily be visited in a day, by train or car.
