My room at the Shire (July 2026) was lovely, the location looking out on the riveris very pretty and The Shire provides easy access to Woodstock and surrounding activities. Lots of construction going on while I was there. That’s kind of necessary in order to keep improving things, but of course upset the ambience a little. (and my hot water.) Staff was great. I would definitely go back.

The Shire was clean and comfortable. It appeared to be a refurbished, traditional motel style establishment. It did not quite have the historic feel I was expecting, but there was nothing wrong with it. There is coffee, but no breakfast available at the motel. This does not have to do with the Shire per se, and we did come in mid October, which is prime leaf peeping season, but we found it somewhat difficult in general to find food in Woodstock without a reservation. The town is beautiful and charming, but I would probably choose to visit it for the day and stay elsewhere.

Check in and out is super easy. The motel checked in on me and my friend throughout our two night stay via text which I appreciated. They had a small room that contained a Keurig, filtered water machine, ice machine, and a cooler full of healthy, substantial snacks for purchase. The beds, linens, and pillows were very comfy and our room overlooked the creek out back. It’s within walking distance to the very charming downtown area where there are shops and restaurants. We really enjoyed our stay!

The room was clean although there were ants on the bathroom floor. Absolutely NO water pressure in the shower and the tub is extremely slippery with no bar to hold or rubber matting. The only amenities they offer is coffee and both mornings there was no creamer so had to go elsewhere for coffee. We stayed 2 nights and they don’t clean after one night so towels add up in the bathroom. Also, there is only one tiny trash can in the room and it’s in the bathroom. They also give you an actual key for the room instead of a card, and only one key at that, so it was a bit inconvenient. We’ve stayed at cheaper places and had better a much better experience. Would not stay here again for the price.
