The Shire Woodstock is a 2-minute walk from downtown, with restaurants and shops close by, yet it still feels tucked away from the busy areas — especially with the river right behind the property. We sat by the river in the evening and made a fire; the water was so low I could actually walk in it.
The room was clean and spacious. One suggestion: add tea/coffee/water service to the second floor as well, not just downstairs.

My room at the Shire (July 2026) was lovely, the location looking out on the riveris very pretty and The Shire provides easy access to Woodstock and surrounding activities. Lots of construction going on while I was there. That’s kind of necessary in order to keep improving things, but of course upset the ambience a little. (and my hot water.) Staff was great. I would definitely go back.

The Shire was clean and comfortable. It appeared to be a refurbished, traditional motel style establishment. It did not quite have the historic feel I was expecting, but there was nothing wrong with it. There is coffee, but no breakfast available at the motel. This does not have to do with the Shire per se, and we did come in mid October, which is prime leaf peeping season, but we found it somewhat difficult in general to find food in Woodstock without a reservation. The town is beautiful and charming, but I would probably choose to visit it for the day and stay elsewhere.

The room was clean although there were ants on the bathroom floor. Absolutely NO water pressure in the shower and the tub is extremely slippery with no bar to hold or rubber matting. The only amenities they offer is coffee and both mornings there was no creamer so had to go elsewhere for coffee. We stayed 2 nights and they don’t clean after one night so towels add up in the bathroom. Also, there is only one tiny trash can in the room and it’s in the bathroom. They also give you an actual key for the room instead of a card, and only one key at that, so it was a bit inconvenient. We’ve stayed at cheaper places and had better a much better experience. Would not stay here again for the price.
