Everything impressed me in a positive way from the very first minute. The service, the design, the cleanliness, and the values they promote — everything stood out. I haven’t felt this way in every hotel.

I like everything in the hostel. The location was superb! The room and areas were clean. It was so convenient that every dorm had its own bathroom, and every bed had a curtain. The kitchen was large, with free coffee. The sitting areas were great, and the staff was very nice and helpful.
The bed was a bit too soft.

Very good position near 5th avenue downtown, friendly staff
It seems like a labyrinth and elevators sometimes were slow but it's ok :)

Clean room, friendly staff, in a good location that's walkable to many fun San Diego sights and/or public transit to get to the farther ones. We didn't spend much time at the hostel, but it looked like it would be a nice place to hang out! Lots of places to sit and relax, a game room with a pool table, and a clean, spacious, well-appointed kitchen. I'd stay here again if/when I stay in San Diego again.
I had a lot of difficulty getting comfortable in my bunk bed, and the walls at the head and foot of the bed made it difficult to stretch out. It felt like the mattress slanted to one side.

Overall was great, very secure, staff were very friendly and helpful. Great kitchen area!
The room was clean but it needs fresh ventilation, the bed can be a little more sturdy

The common areas, the corridor and the locations are great!
The reception room is less welcoming than the rest of the hostel, it should be improved because it does not give the best first impression. The room is okay, not extremely clean but not dirty.

I found the booking process to be super easy, check in and check out were very easy, and there were always enough bathrooms to use. My bed was comfortable, locker spacious, and my privacy curtains actually covered the entire bed. I liked the area as well. I will be staying here again!
The only thing I did not like was the parking situation, but I understand that is not always in the business's control.

It’s affordable and perfect. The hostel has plenty of rooms, each with a basin, bathroom, and eight super-comfy beds. Every bed comes with a towel, two pillows, a duvet, plus a privacy curtain, reading light, and power socket. The sturdy bed frames don’t creak or shake, and the rooms include an air cooler that doubles as a heater in winter. The kitchen on Level 3 is well equipped and even offers free pasta, rice, oil, and seasonings. Guests can also enjoy board games, a pool table, arcade games, vending machines, and TV.
The laundry room is closed for maintenance during my stay which I need to do my laundry at a laundromat at double the price 😢.

The location was perfect if you want to stay near all the bars/night life in the Gaslamp Quarter. The rooms and bathrooms throughout the building were kept clean.
It can get very loud at nights because of the noise coming from the bars. I would recommend some ear plugs if you struggle to sleep with loud noises.

Nice spacious private room. Everything we needed with a sink in the room and shared bathrooms were relatively clean.
Stain on our bedsheets. Any of the rooms facing the street are incredibly noisy. Hostel provided complimentary ear plugs but beware of this if you are a light sleeper.

Amost everything went very well
Your weather was crazy cold! Being in southern Ca I expected the weather to be warmer. The high for 3 days once
hit 80 degrees. I live in the US Virgin Islands, my ocean temp is 84. Great city , next year I will be back with you for
3 more days.

The location was great. Walking distance to the baseball stadium, which was the main purpose of my trip.
Only problem was that the shower didnt have any soap in the dispenser. I do bring my own just in case this happens though

Very clean room and common areas especially the kitchen was a lot nicer than other hostel kitchens I have used in the past
Lots of art on the walls, the decor of the hostel has been done with care. There are many small hangout areas in the common areas
Safe bike storage inside the hostel
Free filtered water and coffee around the clock
Kind and respectful guests
The hostel is very quiet and not many common activities are proposed (only pubcrawl once a week), which did not disturb me but could be offputting for people who expect to come to the hostel to meet many new people. We barely noticed the other people staying in the hostel, guests mostly keep to themselves even in the common areas.

Great location, very central. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms seemed clean.
The hostel smelled terrible. I arrived after an 18h day of travel and just wanted to wind down, but the smell was so bad, I felt so uncomfortable and just wanted to not be there. The room was also incredibly noisy. No sound proofing and a very load AC. Called a friend and given all the noise they thought I was standing next to busy traffic. Hard to fall asleep before 3am. After that things were more quiet. The bathroom did not have a sink, so in order to wash your hands you had to go back to the main room. Not super sanitary. For a hostel I'm sure it's a decent place, but no way it deserves a 8+rating, especially for that price.

Clean, good breakfast, well located and comfy beds
The air filter / air con in the room was a bit bust but nothing terrible
8.0 / 10.0
Private room with private bathroom was ok. The bed was a bunk bed and the bottom bed (king size) was a little uncomfortable. Breakfast served was a bagel and a banana with coffee and tea available (simple but much more than expected).
Unfortunately being in the heart of San Diego has its downsides: at night the street is super loud and all noises are very well heard from the rooms. Fortunately, the hostel furnished free ear plugs.

Location was good
Breakfast is very very very minimal, breakfast is a joke, had to wash dishes ourselves
9.0 / 10.0
Clean, artsy modern design, newly renovated, nice breakfast, best coffee - quality and very safe with staff checking the entry passes upon entering the building. Nice engaged staff.
Even if I asked for a quieter room in the courtyard and was given exactly what I asked for, it was super noisy during the night (loud music/beat from one of the downstairs bars?). In the morning, either someone was disposing of glass bottles into a special container or they were being picked up, but the sound of shattering glass bottles went on forever. The hostel is located in the Gaslamp Quarter, which always seems alive.

The Hi San Diego Downtown Hostel is located right in the heart of Gaslamp Quarter, which makes your stay in San Diego quite easy as you can walk / get a bus or trolley to several places within the city and outside of it.
The Hostel common spaces are spacious and clean. The kitchen has so many utensils (including a rice cooker and free rice!). The breakfast is served every morning on time and it includes several foods (both sweet and sour). There's always coffee and tea available. Also there's a pool table and games in the common room.
Even though it's a busy hostel, the bathrooms were most of the time very clean and I didn't have to ever wait to get to a shower.
The staff was also always friendly and they wrote on a black board the activities happening in the city each day. I found this very helpful and cute :)
Overall a really nice stay in San Diego.
There were very few power plugs and sockets inside the rooms. Which in hindsight is not really a big deal, as it indeed forces you to stay in the common areas more often and be more social! However, you should inform people about this when they check-in.

Location
Value for money
1- The breakfast options were limited and not appetizing. I recommend bringing your own food. The hostel is decent otherwise, but the breakfast needs improvement.
2- The AC is outdated and makes noise.

place was nice
person on bunk above me had needles falling from the bed, didn't feel comfortable.
7.0 / 10.0
It was okay
The bed moved everytime the person from the other bed moved. The bathroom had a foul odor. I asked to get a lower bunk because I pee often at night but was still given an upper bunk. It was a hassle to go down the bed at night.

The location is great for nightlife! The hostel is massive and there is a pool table and arcade machines.
The showers are warm and nice. They have an indicator light to help you keep your water usage down! Very eco!
There is a coin op laundry.
I needed to check in at 2am and they did it for me with no issues.
Accessible by public transport.
The hostel is in a pretty loud spot for nightlife, which can be great but if you are a light sleeper it could be hard. They give earplugs tho and that was enough for me.
It was a bit pricey compared to some other hostels.
There were no privacy curtains or anything but I think this is very normal for a US hostel.

Breakfast. Good kitchen.
We got a room facing a pub which played loud music until way past 2 am. Loud enough so that the windows vibrated. It was impossible to sleep, even with earplugs on. We talked to the front desk people, who gave us another room facing the same pub, even though we found out later on that there were quiet rooms available, but of a superior category (and of course, they wouldn't give us those without paying extra, even though our room was absolutely unacceptable.) The front desk being so unhelpful, I had to call Booking in the middle of the night. Booking green-lighted the upgrade for our second and third nights, but the hotel manager didn't reply to the message and the front desk people told us they couldn't give us the upgrade without the manager's approval. We ended up in a room that was worse than the one we originally paid for (with a bunk bed instead of a double), but at least this one was silent. We stopped complaining to the front desk as we realised it was a lost cause. I also messaged HI directly and got no response.
I felt completely abandoned here. I have been travelling the world for more than 15 years - I have never had such a bad experience in a hotel I hired via Booking.
To the hotel, please soundproof your rooms. We have stayed in noisy cities before - NYC, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Vegas, Paris, you name it... We never had this problem before. You cannot have a room available in which your guests are unable to sleep.

Location is amazing, right in the middle of the Gaslight district
Incredibly noisy AC units are blarring all day and all night - constant noise. Next door there is a cigar parlour and our room stunk like a Montecristo
