The location was perfect. No doubts. The staff was pretty friendly and helpful. Pretty easy to get around, lots of restaurants, bars, groceries, and more.
I didn’t like that my roommate would slam the door during quiet hours, coming in and out 5, 6, 7, even 8 (Yes, I was counting because she woke me up every single time) times around 12 a.m., slamming it every single time. I contacted the hostel and they completely missed my point, stating that guests are allowed to come and go, which I understand. That wasn’t the problem. The problem was the door being slammed every single time.
They offered earplugs, but again, if you’re slamming the door, you can still hear and feel the vibration. Earplugs don’t fix that.
I also did not like the mixed-gender bathroom situation because men would stare at your every move once you came out into the enclosed area. It felt uncomfortable, not for me.
My review is not to bash the hostel. I’ve stayed in different hostels around the world, and this is the first time I’ve seen a guest coming in and out of the room to sleep in another room with a worker literally sneaking her in. That is highly unprofessional and raises a safety concern for me. If a staff member is able to sneak people into rooms, that’s a serious issue.
I also noticed a lot of emphasis during my stay on providing a good review. I’m not sure how the number of reviews is so high because my experience was underwhelming compared to what I saw online, definitely expected more. Personally, I wouldn’t go back.

The staff were absolutely lovely. I really enjoyed the events organized in the lounge on certain evenings. The free breakfast is a very welcome bonus. The hostel is ideally located within walking distance of the embarcadero, the Midway Museum, Seaport Village, Downtown, and Little Italy. Public transportation is also very easily accessible from the hostel. As a woman traveling alone, staying in a hostel for the first time, I always felt completely safe. I had an incredible stay and highly recommend this hostel!
There was a slight smell of sewage in the showers, but nothing unbearable.

I had a private room and it was mostly wonderful but the mattress was terrible (Room 18). I like a firm mattress and I'm fine with stuff not being fancy but damn. My lower back was screaming by the end of the week. I actually checked to see if it was just a box spring by mistake. Time to throw this one out.

I liked how there were cotton towels rather than paper for hands, eco eco-friendly. There was never a line for the bathroom or showers. Had weekly events.
I understand this doesn't have to do w/ the hostel it self but there was someone in my room who was ill, coughing of all time of day and night. Rarely left the room. I had to deal with this the whole time. There could be more seating area for the lounge/game room.

Having a female room
Mixed gender bathrooms and room is too small, there is a weird smell, probably because of the carpets in the hallway

Just a chill place with really helpful easy going staff. Its clean and well maintained. The price is good even for a hostel.
No soap in the showers. Really, I should have expected and planned for this, but I've not stayed in a hostel for a while and didn't think about it.
The pillow was tall and overly firm. I'm particular about pillows. This probably won't affect most people. I still slept alright.

Location was awesome and staff were lovely and accommodating. Rooms were enough for what you needed and the space as a whole was set up really well, with a really great vibe!
The pillows were very similar to sleeping on lumps of wood... Maybe time for an upgrade guys! Haha... Awful nights sleep on them .. the showers took a considerable length of time to get warm at the end of the day and the breakfast was pretty poor. If you didn't get there right at the start of breakfast, there wasn't enough fruit and things left over for you. Bread was simple white bread with jelly, peanut butter and some oat sachets with drip coffee. It did the job, but not worth mentioning. Other than that, was comfortable enough with a nice layout!

Breakfast was very basic and only from 8 am onwards, but it was very convenient
Would have been nice if the top bunk beds had curtains or any other way of covering the room light from late roommates.

That’s my 4 or 5th stay here but this time I got an upgrade from a dorm to a private room, which was amazing. Thank you, Maria! The staff is amazing here. Clean and beautifully equipped kitchen, clean bathrooms due to a regular cleaning. Thank you!
Nothing that I could think of!

It was all good. The vibe in this hostel is so friendly. People who traveled to SD for 4th of July was enjoying nicely. Facilities were good. Hostel is so chic. When you spend your break/rest in the hostel, atmosphere is so cool.
Just stayed one night. But top beds can have a curtain, too. Only bottom beds have a curtain. Shared toilets are a little bit narrow spaces. If you have pain on your legs or if you have problems for climbing up the stairs, it’s a little hard because stairs are too steep, too many and there is no elevator because it’s an old building. A little crowded and noisy at night but it’s very normal because it’s Gaslamp Square and it has bars/clubs and restaurants :)

Nice, stylish hostel.Clean, quiet, cozy, clean sheets and towels, simple but tasty breakfast.Good location and close to everything.I recommend it.
Mrs. erika seemed professionally burnt out with her unnecessary and unjustified answers to questions asked that were not directed at her.In My case twice.I heard about a similar situation in the case of Mrs. Kira, but I haven't had any bad experiences personally. The rest of the staff was very nice, including the owner.Regards and I wish Mrs.erica better personal culture...

There are cheerful and energetic staff members.
I am a woman and I hate men. Even though I told the hostel in advance that I don't want to share a room with a man, please give me a women's room, a man was in my room. Not considerate enough. I often saw the staff of this hostel having fun with men and women in the living room, toilet, and shower in the middle of the night. I was told by the staff to give it five stars when I checked out. I was asked to manipulate the rating. So I gave it five stars as requested. It should be about two stars. This is a hostel with selfish staffs. Please work more seriously.
The bed creaks a lot.
Many people were sounding the alarm in the kitchen.
There are only stairs, so moving luggage is difficult.

Fab location in downtown SD in the ♥️ of the Gaslamp! Funky old Victorian brothel turned hostel and they kept much of the interior charm of the old saloon days. Be sure to pack your groceries as you have access to a full kitchen with commercial space and the breakfast bar means you shouldn’t starve ever.
The beds were comfy I just wish they weren’t college style dorm bunks. It would be fun if they were more built in to project the charm of the buildings era.
