About this house rental

Summary:

Wake up directly on the Pacific in a Summerland home considered the closest residence to the ocean on the Santa Barbara coast. Perched just feet from the surf, this architect-designed retreat offers panoramic water views, warm cedar interiors, a deck above the waves, and thoughtfully added modern comforts. Watch dolphins and seabirds pass by, with Summerland, Montecito, and Santa Barbara close at hand.

The Space:

Originally designed in 1972 by California architect Kenneth Kruger as his own coastal retreat, this cedar-shingled Summerland home was thoughtfully reimagined in 2025. The renovation preserved its Sea Ranch-inspired lines, warm cedar paneling, terra-cotta floors, and distinctive architectural character while adding double-glazed windows, full insulation, in-floor heating, and a kitchen designed for gathering.

Perched on piers anchored to the seawall and just feet from the surf, the home is considered the closest residence to the ocean on the Santa Barbara coast. Nearly every window frames the Pacific, with views of blue water, passing dolphins, seals sunning on the rocks, and seabirds gliding by. Guests often say it feels less like staying in a house and more like being aboard a boat.

The living room opens completely to the oceanfront deck through bifold glass doors, blurring the line between the interior and the ocean air. Warm wood finishes, terra-cotta flooring, and vintage and one-of-a-kind furnishings sourced from local antique and consignment shops give the home a collected, lived-in warmth.

The kitchen features soapstone countertops and an L-shaped dining booth angled directly toward the water, creating a comfortable place to cook, gather, and enjoy the view.

Upstairs, the home includes a serene primary bedroom and a light-filled guest room. A double-height wall of windows brings abundant natural light into the space, while two beautifully finished bathrooms provide added comfort.

Outside, the deck hovers over the water and offers a front-row seat to the changing coastline. It is an ideal place for morning coffee, sunset, wildlife watching, and listening to the surf below.

Because the home sits exceptionally close to the Pacific, guests should expect to hear the natural sound of the waves throughout their stay. This direct connection to the ocean is a defining part of the property.

The home is steps from the sand in the heart of Summerland, near local antique shops, cafés, and Lookout Park. Montecito, Miramar Beach, Rosewood Miramar Beach, Coast Village Road, and downtown Santa Barbara are all a short drive away.
