About this house rental

Nestled in the heart of Dartmoor National Park, Langhill is a spacious and characterful historic country house that brings family and friends together in an unforgettable setting. Surrounded by beautiful landscapes and far-reaching views, this 400-year-old heritage home offers the perfect base for walkers, explorers, food lovers and those simply seeking peace and relaxation. Whether you're looking for an active holiday discovering Dartmoor's moorland, rivers and villages, or a peaceful escape spent unwinding with family and friends, Langhill provides a warm and welcoming environment in every season.

The house combines traditional charm with generous open plan living spaces designed for socialising and entertaining. Original features, vaulted ceilings and the property's old bread oven reflect its rich Jacobean character, while modern comforts ensure a relaxing stay. At the heart of the home is a large open-plan vaulted living room with an extra-large wood-burning stove, creating the perfect place to unwind after a day on Dartmoor. A dedicated media room with comfortable seating for 6 adults provides a comfortable space for movie nights or sporting events, while the formal dining room features a magnificent oak table seating 12, ideal for long celebratory meals and memorable gatherings. Subject to availability, guests can arrange for a private chef to create a special dining experience. The well-equipped cook's kitchen provides everything needed for preparing everything from relaxed breakfasts to festive feasts, making it a wonderful space for families and groups who enjoy cooking and dining together.

During warmer months, dining naturally extends outdoors, with a large gas barbecue located in the stable courtyard and a variety of outdoor spaces perfect for alfresco meals and evening drinks. Wicker picnic baskets are provided for guests wishing to make the most of the beautiful grounds and surrounding countryside.

The outdoor spaces are a highlight of the property. Extensive grounds offer numerous places to relax, play and explore, with beautiful views in every direction. Guests can enjoy outdoor games including croquet and darts, gather around the fire pit as the sun sets, or spend evenings stargazing beneath Dartmoor's famously dark skies. Covered outdoor entertaining areas beside the house and within the pavilion provide comfortable spaces for celebrations whatever the weather. A large stream-fed pond creates a tranquil focal point within the grounds, although it contains deep water and children and pets must be supervised at all times.

Winter is just as beautiful on Dartmoor, and Langhill reflects the change in season allowing you to cost up in front of the wood burner or in the cosy red room with a stunning inglenook fireplace.

For those slower winter evenings, the cosy sitting room offers the perfect setting for friendly family competition. Gather around the fire, enjoy a favourite board game and spend quality time together in relaxed and comfortable surroundings.

If a bubble bath soak in a roll top bath appeals, you have two to choose from in the house.

The kitchen and main living room enjoy underfloor heating, and the rest of the house is served by large radiators throughout ensuring you remain cosy whatever the weather.

Langhill enjoys an enviable location just a three-minute drive from the historic market town of Moretonhampstead. This friendly Dartmoor town offers independent shops, cafés and local amenities, along with a heated outdoor swimming pool and just up the road at the Mill End is a unique riverside sauna. As one of the gateways to the High Moor, Moretonhampstead is perfectly positioned for exploring some of Dartmoor's most spectacular landscapes, making it a favourite destination for walkers, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts.

Nearby Chagford is widely regarded as one of Dartmoor's most charming and sought-after villages, known for its vibrant atmosphere, excellent food scene, independent boutiques and welcoming pubs. The surrounding area is rich in history and heritage, with attractions including Castle Drogo, the last castle to be built in England. From ancient stone circles and dramatic tors to picturesque villages and hidden woodland walks, Dartmoor offers endless opportunities for discovery.

While the national park feels wonderfully remote, many of Devon's other attractions are within easy reach. Exeter, with its impressive cathedral, excellent shopping and historic streets, is approximately 45 minutes away. The luxury surroundings of Bovey Castle and it’s championship golf course along with Gidleigh Park and its Michelin starred dining can also be reached in less than 10 and 20 minutes respectively. The stunning South Devon coast is approximately 50 minutes from the property, and the North Devon coast is just over an hour away, making day trips to beaches and seaside towns an easy option and full of choices.

Whether you are planning a milestone celebration, a large family holiday, a gathering of friends or simply an escape to the countryside, Langhill offers a unique combination of space, comfort, character and location. From leisurely breakfasts overlooking the grounds and afternoons exploring Dartmoor, to evenings around the dining table or beneath the stars, this is a place where lasting memories are made.
