An exceptional machiya stay and one of the most beautifully designed accommodations of our entire Japan trip. The house is enormous — easily 200+ m² of restored space arranged in long enfilade — yet despite the scale it feels warm and cocooning rather than empty. Every room has been thought through with real architectural taste: high beamed ceilings with slatted wood, hand-laid tile mosaics, mid-century walnut furniture, Edison pendants, parquet floors, and a quiet design language that respects the soul of the original Hida machiya while adding genuine modern comfort. Spotlessly clean and beautifully maintained. The space is built around a generous main living area that combines a fully equipped kitchen (induction stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, Nespresso, full cookware), a dining table for six, and a comfortable lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows. Multiple bedrooms, each with their own character — one even has its own designer washbasin. A washing machine is provided. But the real signature of this house is the upstairs *home cinema room* with a 100" projector screen, dimmed slat-ceiling and oversized lounging sofas — completely unique for a rental, and perfect for late evenings. Location is in Ōshinmachi, the quiet residential pocket just north of Takayama's old town. You're a 5-minute walk to Sanmachi, the Miyagawa morning market, Sakurayama Hachimangu shrine and the riverfront, but you sleep in a real, lived-in neighbourhood rather than in the tourist core. Free private parking on site — almost unheard of in this area and invaluable if you're touring the Alps by car. The host, Mr. Nakajima, was the gentle finishing touch. Communication was warm, attentive and personal throughout — checking we'd arrived safely, offering to collect our rubbish, sending us a kind note before our departure as a typhoon approached. Self check-in via smart lock was seamless.
