Sakakan was so much more than a place to stay. It was one of the most meaningful travel experiences of my life. Staying in this beautiful, historic Japanese home and being welcomed into the family’s everyday life was extraordinary. The home-cooked traditional meals, wonderful conversations around the family table, and genuine warmth of everyone I met made me feel like a welcomed friend rather than a guest. I was even invited to a local lacquer festival and the opening night of their new izakaya! These are experiences I could never have planned or purchased. The historic setting, peaceful mountain surroundings, and incredible hospitality made my stay unforgettable. This is the Japan I had hoped to discover.
Nothing. I wouldn’t change a thing about this wonderful experience. The home is a little chilly so bring some cozy clothes.. but I kind of liked it that way!

Stayed here for one night while walking the Nakaendo. The hosts are lovely people who really care about making your stay worthwhile. The hosts made local food for dinner and we had some beer and soju afterwards.

Everything! Hosts were super friendly and hospitable. They waited on me to have dinner 😢 and breakfast in the morning. So sweet and thoughtful. I was sooo happy they had a 2n1 washing machine. Shower was hot, bed was very comfortable. The view from the room is really nice. The hosts are really cool, they are into vintage collectibles and antiques. Truly felt like I was visiting family in Kiso. ❤️❤️
