The apartment was spacious, the bathrooms newly renovated, and the large kitchen was fairly well equipped. The view from the main bedroom was lovely. There was a designated parking space, and the Wi-Fi worked well: a router was in the living room, with a repeater in the dressing room before the main bedroom. On arrival, the bathrooms were clean. There is insecticide spray provided, we have used it almost daily.

The apartment’s doors and windows offered virtually no sound or temperature insulation. From the second bedroom, passing cars sounded as though they were driving through the room, making it a poor place to sleep. The bed in that bedroom was also short. The view from the main bedroom had an unwelcome second act: the neighbors downhill kept a yard filled with assorted items, including old bicycles, a toilet bowl, and scraps. They lit fires in an old bathtub and cooked over them in a cauldron. Smoke drifted into the accommodation. One night, a loud argument went on for 2-3h; the police were eventually called. With the windows offering so little sound insulation, every bit of it carried inside. There was also a huge cockroach in the bathroom. I can’t know where it came from, but after that we kept the windows shut at night. There were no insect screens on the windows or doors. The listing advertised air conditioning. What we found was a portable ventilation box with blinking colored lights, not air conditioning. It wasn’t especially hot during our stay, but we ran it for two nights; the airflow helped keep the humidity down while we kept the windows closed. Communication with the owners was sparse and difficult. They messaged we could be greeted in person or check ourselves in, but didn’t provide the lock code. I had to contact them after arriving to find out how to get inside. They communicated only in Portuguese, not English. The bathrooms were clean, but the rest of the apartment seemed only partly tidied: blond hairs were scattered in nearly every room. There was no vacuum cleaner for us to use. Sleep was the final casualty. Cars woke us in the roadside bedroom; in the main bedroom, the neighbors’ rooster began crowing around 4–5 a.m. and continued until 7–8. Thanks to the poor insulation it sounded very close indeed. The apartment has real strengths, especially its size, kitchen, renovated bathrooms, and bedroom view. But guests should weigh those against the above
