The Shire Glamping

We stayed for one night before catching the ferry. The owner was very friendly and welcoming. The facilities were very clean and comfortable. It was a fun little adventure for the kids, despite the first heavy rainfall in weeks! The kids enjoyed the tree swing and pool table. My husband said it was a good shower!

It was a really quiet and romantic site. The shire has its name for a reason

This is a fairly new glamping site, thoughtfully and tastefully developed by Jay and his family over the last few years. The site is accessed via a sloped, gated track with car parking to one side. It is best to reverse up the slope into the property. Once in the grounds, we met with our host who gave us a thorough tour of the site and explained all the facilities available. The communal areas included seating, an outdoor pool table, rope swing, ladder toss game, rock painting and (on certain occasions) an excellent Slip and Slide. The glamping tents are positioned along the hillside within the grounds, spaced out to give privacy. Outside the tent we had a cooking tripod BBQ, BBQ tools, an outdoor food prep station (along with crockery and cutlery). A cool box was provided and the host regularly & proactively topped up the ice blocks for us. Inside the tent we had a comfortable double bed, two single camp beds, a table and chairs and bedside tables. The tent was themed with sunflowers and beautifully done. Solar lights inside and out - together with an adjustable torch (which included a disco mode, which my daughter loved) meant it was great in the evenings. The bathroom facilities are very good. There are several clean, well maintained toilets along with warm power showers. Outdoor butler sinks can be used as washing up stations. The location is remote but not isolated. This meant we had excellent clear skies at night (some of the best I've seen in the UK) - but we were also just ten minutes away from Dover. During our time we visited Dover Castle (excellent - full day), The White Cliffs (highly recommend the tour of Fan Bay Deep Shelter - free to National Trust members. Takes just over 1h), Betteshanger Park for a Target Archery lesson (a bargain at £10 each for an hour with David) and the Battle of Britain Memorial site and museum (very well done - interactive and interesting for kids). Overall, this was an excellent find. Thanks Jay!

Very little here - we were really pleased with the site. As it had only been open a matter of weeks, there were a couple of minor snagging points, but the host was on site to fix anything which was flagged immediately. Note the post code on Apple Maps took us about 200 yards further down the road from the actual location. Look out for the "Shire" sign and reverse up the driveway.
