Villa Drahnet-Zervudachi (La Villa del Pascià):

In 1849, the Egyptian Pasha Drahnet-Zervudachi built a magnificent villa in Oggebbio and designed the accompanying park entirely in the Arabic style. The Pasha, who was a high-ranking dignitary at the court of the Egyptian Viceroy Pasha Ismail and who, according to rumors, had become very wealthy through a fortunate inheritance, created here—nestled between the green of the mountains and the blue of the water—an island of the Orient on Lake Maggiore. The “Villa del Pascià” was synonymous with immeasurable wealth among the common people, for over 40 servants, gardeners, and stablehands lived there alone, responsible for the well-being of the lords and ladies and their numerous guests. One of them was the famous composer Giuseppe Verdi, who, as a close friend of Pasha Drahnet, was commissioned by Viceroy Ismail to compose an opera for the newly opened opera house in Cairo. Thus, inspired by the opulent Arabian ambience on Lake Maggiore, the masterpiece “Aida” was created; it premiered to triumphant acclaim in the Egyptian capital in 1871 and went on to enjoy a triumphant run around the world.
