Canalside View House - Modern 11 Bed Retreat in the Yorkshire Dales

This property is a lovely location with easy access to the pretty canal. It has lots of bedrooms which was ideal for our large family. The kitchen has a selection of crockery and glasses. Pets are allowed (downstairs only). Lots of free parking on the road. Easy self check in. Dining table. Outdoor space.

There were some small things that could have improved the place and a couple of bigger issues. The small ones were the fact that there were only 5 forks (we were a group of 10); it is advertised as having towels but some rooms did not have any and some of the ones that did were tiny, old hand towels; there was a lack of extra toilet rolls for a house that takes a high number of guests. There is no information about what's allowed in the green bin, we googled it. The WiFi code was not readily available. A welcome pack or a welcome message would help this. The bigger issues were that the fridge was turned off on arrival without our knowledge so food was sat in a warm fridge. When we turned it on, it was hardly cool at all. We spent a long time and lots of money preparing food and lots of it went off. The oven took ages to cook things. I appreciate the fact that the property is very reasonably priced but I wish we'd known these things before arrival. Having said that, we had a lovely break and would not discourage booking here. Just be aware before you book.

The location was as promised. Close road parking easy. Very spacious house.

We couldn’t get any more than one radiator to generate heat. So was a bit chilly. Maybe if we had contacted landlord they would have fixed this. But we shouldn’t have needed to. Towels very small. Kitchen and utensils very dirty. Had to clean everything! Real ‘hotch potch’ of saucepans and utensils. Had to buy utensils in order to cook meal. Only china plates. The rest were plastic for kids. Only 4 mugs! Not enough knives and forks for 11 people. We got by on a smaller number of people. Only two gigantic cooking pots - no saucepan set. And one of those gigantic pots had only one handle - dangerous! Worse - the oven door DOESN’T CLOSE! So dinner took absolute age to cook with us having to find something to wedge it shut! Don’t feel a safe house - no fire alarms ‼️ No CO2 detector in kitchen where boiler is. Decor is not great - but that’s kind of expected for the budget price. With a higher standard of cleaning, especially the kitchen and thought to how a big family/ group can cook a meal - this could be a really nice stay. Rather got the impression the owners haven’t stepped foot in there in a long time…. or they just don’t really care. Thankfully we were only there from 4pm until 8am the following morning. In that sense - it served a basic purpose at a budget price.
