About this house rental
As one of Portland’s most treasured historic homes on the National Historic Register, the Joseph Bergman House is a truly grand 1885 Victorian nestled in the heart of Portland’s Northwest, the best living in the city.
Today it’s often called the “Instagram House” for all the passersby who stop, marvel and take selfies of its timeless beauty. While the exterior is clearly the star attraction, the interiors are no less impressive with soaring ceilings, handcrafted woodwork, and unique architectural details.
From its storybook entrance to its sun-filled garden and coveted off-street parking, this is a rare opportunity to rent a historic home in one of Portland’s most vibrant neighborhoods.
Note
Although Bergman features three bedrooms and can accommodate family life, it’s perfectly suited for a couple. It doesn’t feel too big with its welcoming aesthetic and open spaces.
Downstairs descriptions

Furnished to entertain in a space that showcases the historic features, but is styled for modern living. Original art hangs on the walls to inspire conversation with a desk at the window for work with a street view. Roll out the bar cart for drinks.
Living room
The fireplace, recently outfitted with gas, is the winning feature here. Switch on the flames and the TV and get cozy on the plush couch. This room is styled for relaxation and good times alike. The original pocket doors can be closed for even more warmth or opened to connect to the parlor.
Dining room
Dining is designed for six in a room entirely furnished from CB2 & Restoration Hardware with original art adorning the walls. The Ash and Japanese Maple trees bring the outside in, no matter the season. The shag carpet adds even more texture and softens the modern furnishings.
Kitchen & Pantry
Enjoy this fully equipped kitchen with everything you need to prepare meals from any era, despite the old world feel. The bistro table and bench are perfect for informal meals and intimate gatherings. The butler’s pantry featuring floor to ceiling cabinets will inspire you to display your groceries and cook even with all the restaurants just outside.

There is no shortage of storage in this basement! It spans the entire footprint of the home. You’ll find the washer and dryer here with plenty of space for sorting and folding. There’s also a private entrance to the garden and a working sink for cleaning up after art projects or dirty jobs.

Queen size bed in an ultra spacious room with great storage - closet and dresser - with windows that let in just the right amount of light. Desk with live edge wood in iconic NW style to inspire thoughtful work and a plush Ralph Lauren carpet for elegance.
Bedroom three
Comfy twin beds that are just as suited for adults as children. Sit in the ultra mod rocking chair and get travel inspo from the prints of iconic global destinations on the walls. Tulip desk and vintage dresser in the room with an adjacent closet.
Den
This is the most handsome den you ever did see in a Victorian. The leather couch stretches the wall with plush pillows and furry throws that beg for a break. Get a caffeine jolt to return to work with the Nespresso machine or burn calories on the Elliptical. The spacious modern desk overlooks majestic Ash trees covered in moss for a green view even in winter. The desk is equipped with a flat-screen and home printer.

Enjoy the claw foot tub for a soak or shower. With views over the garden, you’ll commune with nature for added relaxation. The marble vanity adds a touch of sophisticated elegance.

8 - Spring through Fall is the sugar ant season throughout the Pacific Northwest. Please store items accordingly and clean thoroughly after cooking and eating. Dispose of food waste promptly.
9 - Items left behind can be shipped to you at the cost of shipping + a $30 processing fee.
10 - Excess cleaning may result in an additional cleaning fee.
11 - Violation of house rules may result in eviction and/or monetary fine.
