Campbells Stables

The location in the town - it was a quirky house that had so much potential!

First of all it was freezing cold when we arrived - I had been told by the host how to put the heating on but being a big old house it took a long time to warm up (- not sure why the cleaners who had been in before couldn't have put the heating on for us?) also there was a wood-burning stove (which we love & have at home) but there wasn't enough wood to put it on - we had to go out & buy some!! BUT worst of all - there was only one toilet to be shared by 5 adults (& there were 3 more beds in the house so potentially 8 people would have to share ONE toilet!!!) also there were plenty of nooks & crannies/cupboards where another toilet could have been put! BUT even worse was the spiral wooden staircase leading up to one of the 2 lounges (& up to one of the bedrooms) - it had NO hand rail & was potentially lethal - one wrong foot & one of us could have fallen all the way down (4 out of 5 of us were in our 70s) - definitely a Health & Safety issue!!! Strangely, the other flight of stairs had a rope strung up where a hand rail should have been & that was great but the other one was dangerous!! A minor issue was that there were no instructions as to how to work the television or anything else for that matter - like a cooker manual! Campbell Stables has the potential to be a lovely place to stay (& we have stayed in some other amazing rented properties in Berwick) but sadly I don't think the owners had thought some things through properly - the single toilet being the main problem - lucky we were with very good friends so we were able to sort out a rota, but until another toilet is installed along with a handrail on the spiral wooden staircase - I don't think we'd go back!!
